Biography

Canvey Island, Essex, was an unlikely birthplace for Britain's finest R&B band. Its bleak industrial skyline set against the cold waters of the Thames estuary, keeps it from inclusion in most holiday brochures, but in the 1960's it was home to teenage friends Lee Collinson, Chris White and John Sparkes.

The trio shared a strong interest in music, and with like minded friends, ... Read more in Amazon's Dr. Feelgood Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense British R&B from the Godfathers of Punk. 16 Dec 2001
Format:Audio CD
Five one day sessions recorded between 1973 and 1978, and you have a CD of 21 tracks of such stripped down intense British R&B that should leave no doubts why Dr.Feelgood are called the "Godfathers of Punk". For a fan like myself it was a joy to finally hear studio versions of live classics such as "Checking up on my Baby" and "I'm a Hog for you Baby", and "Route 66" played as if they owned the right to do the definitive version. Students of the bass guitar and drums should also start here for a lesson in "Solid Rock Foundation". John B.Sparks and The Big Figure built songs to last. The BBC engineers have also my admiration for lifetime service to the "Bash it down and go to the Pub" school of recording. A lesson for all bands. Rehearse your set, get a good engineer, and spend your advance on other pleasures, instead of weeks of guitar overdubs. This is music that blew a 15 year olds mind and makes a middle aged man very happy.

3.0 out of 5 stars One for the collector 17 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
Having bought The Pirates live at the BBC which is a fantastic, if uneven, collection of live studio recordings and two concert sets, I had high expectations for this CD. However,it all sounds a bit muted, especially the first few tracks, with the band sounding tentative and tired. The tracks lack the excitement of the live versions on Stupidity and don't have the sound quality of the studio versions. There is no banter or interviews and no concert material. If you are an avid Feelgoods collector then fine but I would advise anyone wanting to hear the original line-up at their best to get their hands on Stupidity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, No-Frills R&B 19 Feb 2002
By Clark Paull - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
For some reason, I expected a flood of product being released after the death of Dr. Feelgood vocalist Lee Brilleaux, but unfortunately it just hasn't happened. I guess quality is better than quantity though and "BBC Sessions 1973-1978" is a keeper. Thirteen of the 21 tracks feature guitarist/headcase/show-off Wilko Johnson, an absolute genius and the real "Master Of The Telecaster" (with all apologies to Albert Collins), casting off a barrage of chunky, greasy, and downright dirty chords, riffs, and leads, all apparently without the use of a pick. The remainder feature Johnson's replacement, John "Gypie" Mayo, who seamlessly stepped in without a hitch and surprised everyone who thought Johnson's departure meant the end of the band. Although usually branded "pub rock," Dr. Feelgood were essentially a down and dirty R&B outfit, comprised of the aforementioned Brilleaux, Johnson/Mayo, and an ace rhythm section of John B. Sparkes on bass and ominously monikered The Big Figure on drums. If "Malpractice" is still in print, it's the perfect introduction to the band and one of the great lost albums of the '70's, but "BBC Sessions 1973-1978" is a great companion piece. Recommended...

4.0 out of 5 stars Gypie Mayo rocks pretty good too 22 May 2012
By Christopher Bushman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Tracks 1-13 feature the original Dr. Feelgood lineup with the wonderful and one-of-a-kind Wilko Johnson on guitar

Tracks 14-21 feature Wilko's replacement Gypie Mayo rocking the six string

The conventional wisdom holds that all Dr. Feelgood recordings from the Wilko Johnson era are the gold-standard and everything else is "Other". I guess I also subscribe to that notion however I have to tell you that these Gypie Mayo tracks are very rockin'. The first 13 are very good but the remainder have a fire, grit and looseness that I don't here in the others. I suspect that this recording captures the band on a day that they felt they had something to prove to the nation and they rose to the occasion very admirably.
