Product Description

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the first ever official release of TODD RUNDGREN AT THE BBC. This four-disc collection comprises three CDs and a DVD (NTSC / Region Free) featuring all of the surviving radio and television broadcasts in the BBC archive transmitted on radio and television in the UK between 1972 and 1982.

The set features on CD Todd’s solo 1972 BBC Radio One “In Concert” performance, recorded soon after the release of his seminal album “Something Anything”, the classic 1975 performance by Todd Rundgren and Utopia at Hammersmith Odeon, London, (including a previously unreleased track ‘Something’s Coming’) – on the first ever UK concert tour of Todd Rundgren and Utopia, a 1977 performance at the Oxford Polytechnic by Todd Rundgren and Utopia (promoting the “Ra”) album, and a DVD featuring three different performances for the classic “Old Grey Whistle Test” series; the 1975 Todd Rundgren and Utopia session, a film of Todd Rundgren & Utopia at the Bearsville Picnic in 1977 (performing ‘Singring and the Glass Guitar’) and the entire recordings made for a 1982 solo Todd Rundgren Whistle Test special (including two songs not featured on the original TV broadcast).

This set is sure to delight the legions of Todd Rundgren fans and is a superb document of Todd’s continuing development as both a solo artist and with his band Utopia between 1972 and 1982.

“Todd Rundgren at the BBC” has been remastered and authored from the original BBC masters and is presented in a clamshell box with a booklet featuring a new essay.

So much for delay of gratification. This came yesterday and I consumed it voraciously today. First up- the packaging. This is a nice chunky box which feels well constructed. Each disc comes on a cardboard sleeve with nice artwork. There is a also a beautifully designed leaflet with sleeve notes. Real effort has been put into this and that makes this box set a good choice for a Christmas present for a fan. The quality of the material makes it a nice gift for either an established fan or a new one. New fans will get Crystal clear performances of some of the best early Todd material. However, long term fans will get much in this package which is unique even if they already have (as I do) a lot of Todd material.
There is much in this package which is unique. The first disc gives a very nice solo studio concert by Todd talking a lot more than normal about the music. A highlight of this is his rendition of Piss Aaron in which he sings the song in stages interspersed with anecdotes about each of the classmates which is a character in the song. This is a really nice and unique touch. The audio is mono but it is so clear that you would not notice.
Disc 2 has a concert from Hamersmith Odeon. You may have heard this before or a bootleg of it but the quality here is so much better. You can really make out a lot of additional sounds including the Luther Vandross and Anthony Hinton backing vocals and also just how great roger Powell's keyboard playing is.
Disc 3 is a Utopia concert with much of the Ra album. The highlight here is the almost half hour rendition of Singring and the Glass Guitar. This is absolutely stunning with all the superb solos. It is the best version I have ever heard of this track and much better than the album version. One to take as part of your tracks on Desert Island Discs.

First, this review is for the CDs only as I haven't got round to the DVD yet! The good news, we get three TR In Concert performances; from 1972, 75 and 77. The 1972 is especially welcome as I hadn't heard this before. Unfortunately it's fairly short (the whole disc including the two 'Whistle Test' performances only comes in at 46 minutes) but it is excellent. Disc 2 is the broadcast highlights of the Hammersmith Odeon show in 1975 and the good news here is that the full b/c has been restored with the inclusion of "Something's Coming", which was cut from the recent stand-alone release of this gig. The sound however is noticeably muted compared to the Shout Factory release, not enough to put you off but muted just the same. The third In Concert is from 1977 and again is most welcome (partly because my old cassette of this got chewed up!), it includes a stunning rendition of "Singring and the Glass Guitar" and opens with an incandescent "Overture/Communion with the Sun". This too is not only the full BBC b/c but is slightly longer as the closing number "Utopia Theme" does not fade out as it did back in the day. The sound is rather fuller than on the '75 show also. So, on the CDs alone, no complaints and a definite 5 stars from me. Given the recent BBC DVDs in such sets (e.g. UFO, PFM) I am confident the DVD will not disappoint either once I get round to it.

An excellent selection of Todd and Utopia's live recordings for the BBC. As mentioned by another reviewer, the package is great and would not disappoint as a present to a Todd fan (unlike the woeful Rick Wakeman Bootleg set, as an example of how not to do it). The sound on all of these recordings is excellent and the only additional note I would make re the 1977 show - the original BBC transcript of the show had 'Emergency Splashdown', 'Verb To Love' and 'Hiroshima' as tracks 6-8 which have disappeared for this set, so if you have the Oxford 1977 'fan recording', don't ditch it. This would have been 5 stars if those tracks had not been cut as it's a great set.
