Product Description

Third studio album by the Brit Award winning English singer-songwriter. The album debuted at #1 in the UK Albums Chart and features the top 5 single 'I Won't Let You Go'.

BBC Review

Released three years to the day after his previous LP, the chart-topping (in Ireland, at least) Songs for You, Truths for Me, The Awakening returns James Morrison to the business of bothering the middle-of-the-road with his Rod Stewart-meets-Ben Ottewell tones. There are countless worse noises in pop - but there's nothing in his voice, fine though it is, that conveys the emotional weight he should perhaps be carrying after such childhood hardship (school-days loneliness, and he nearly died as an infant). It's a television talent show beast, a chimera of sorts, halfway between the soul singers he loved growing up and the grit of an indie frontman. It just exists, peculiarly passionless, when it should grab hold of the listener and demand that they pay it their utmost attention.

But, again, it's not an off-putting sound - and there are moments on The Awakening where its audience does indeed sit up and take notice. One such number is Up: remarkable not for Morrison's measured performance, but that of guest vocalist Jessie J. The BBC Sound of 2011 poll-topper has never sounded as good as she does here, delivering a remarkably understated turn that's miles away from the horrible hyperactivity of her own album. Their lines entwine excellently, and there's a warmth to the song rare amongst Artist A featuring Artist B offerings. Person I Should Have Been shares compositional DNA with Sting's much-covered/sampled Shape of My Heart, but Morrison never edges too close to pastiche (which would be easy to do, given the track's skeletal form); and the title-track is the slow-rising centrepiece to this record, where a light acoustic introduction gives way to a far-fuller song almost evocative of Stevie Wonder. One Life, which should be a rallying call to embrace the moment, is oddly stillborn on delivery - but it's a rare blip in consistency.

Yet, as The Awakening unwinds, one can't shift the feeling that we should be touched deeper. Morrison's surpassed the likes of James Blunt and Paolo Nutini as a British solo artist able to meld modern pop sensibilities with echoes of his own influences without the collision sounding forced. Compared to those artists, his vocals cut through with a far greater sense of sincerity. But The Awakening is lacking the grandstanding moment it needs to elevate it above reserved recommendation - it's a safe, steady affair, but about as revelatory as a Chris de Burgh best-of. Morrison has a truly great album in him - he's the emotional baggage to craft it, should he let locked-away demons loose - but for the third time in a row, this isn't it.

Having been a fairly recent convert to James Morrison, and playing his first two albums to death, I was eagerly looking forward to this album.

I was a tiny bit disappointed at first, but most of the tracks really do grow on you. James is as heartfelt as ever, and my favourite tracks are 6 Weeks, I Won't Let You Go, One Life and All Around the World - this is one of the best last track I have heard for a while.

Definitely worth a listen, and a very good album.

Wow! The CD arrived 3 days ago and I can't seem to stop playing it - at work, in the car and on the way home. I got the album after hearing 'I won't let you go' and 'Up' on the radio which I quickly fell in love with. One of my top albums for the past year. Love the emotional lyrics. Thank you James Morrison, for sharing your emotions with us so beautifully through your music.

Well, i have read the reviews on here and decided to listen to the album quite a few times before i wrote anything.

The album is stunning, simple as that. And any music fan will understand that. His voice is incredible in most of the songs and while i don;t think its the best album ever written, it certanly has 5-6 songs on there that he could release as a single.

The obvious won't let you go, is an instant classic......i would even dare to say one of the songs of the year. Absolute musical genious.

Loads of others, track 1, 3, 7, 11, 12, 13 all stand out for me as great great records.

Guys, as a matter of fact james Morrison is quite simply one of the best solo artists in the country at the moment and this album really does show off not only his voice but his musical ability.

I challenge anyone to name a singer at the moment to rival this guy's voice.

Enjoy the album, its brilliant.

Yes this a different album to previous, but when you take the time to let go and really listen you will appreciate its depth. It's is brilliant and JM has moved forward to a new level, how can a performer win, if it was the same as the last albums, fans would be unhappy at that, we need to accompany him on his musical journey. The Awakening

Once again James Morrison produces an amazing album full of rich lyrics and sound! This album is defiantly a little more 'jazzier' if you will, than the other albums. James' voice is simply stunning and as good as ever. A Brilliant Album from an amazing artist. :) An Instant buy for any James Morrison fan, like myself.

James Morrisons' first two albums are real favourites of mine, and his third, whilst not quite as playable for every occasion, is another solid release. 2011's 'The Awakening' contains some excellent songs, and a few that aren't of the same high standard. If you could, I would rate it 4.5 stars.

The singles virtually capture the best moments of this album. 'One Life' is very inspiring, with lyrics that encourage you to live you're life as you want to live it, and better advice has never been given. 'I Won't Let You Go' is an excellent love song, and the rhythmic, Michael Jackson-like 'Slave to the Music' should have set the charts on fire.

'The Awakening' is for fans of the first two albums. Like I said, there are some forgettable tracks, but if you're a fan of James' husky, Rod Stewart-like voice and soulful music, you'll want to buy this one for the good stuff.

Well, this is about the 6th CD of James I have bought (including some singles and acoustics). It is the best one yet. James is unsurpassed in smooth, soulful and sexy music. Touches my heart every time. Love his music and love James!!
