Excellent! 13 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Having returned my previous kindle purchase - it was sooooooo slow and hadn't got going after 50 pages - I wasn't overly optimistic as I began reading The Awakening.

Well, have I ever been more wrong?!

The story starts slowly, but you can feel it building, new characters arriving, existing characters developing, from very early in the book. As the story builds, so does the excitement. And it carries on this way until the very last page .... and I do mean the last page!!

Yes, you know the story type. There's a hero with skills that develop ...... a love interest ..... also with skills, there's a very bad baddie ..... and there's a good punch-up as the end approaches. Predictable? Possibly. But there are twists and turns along the way and the twist at the end leaves you logging back in to Amazon to get the next book in the series ...

........ WHICH ISN'T YET AVALABLE!!!!!!!!!!

For that reason alone a should give this book zero stars! But this story deserves 5 because I couldn't put it down.

Scintillating 5 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a scintillating read. The characters of Alex and Gabriella are highly visual and fairly leap off the page. Alex is a guy the girls will warm to with hidden depths and strengths. Gabriella is an intense, complex character and one that will excite and intrigue the boys.
The story captivates the reader from the beginning. The plot unfolds with a quick pace, promising a roller coaster of a ride with twists and turns at every corner. It is one that will take you into the night. I love the writing style which is succinct and clean, not wasting one word, which is the mark of a clever and skilled writer. As for the comparison with Twilight, this book is individual with an original approach. It has an electrifying story with exciting depths and textures that grab the imagination, that thrill with the emotions and interactions of the characters. I would highly recommend this. Unputdownable.

When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure if I could relate to the down-trodden Alex, and a few times I found myself wanting to tell him to pull himself together. But before I knew it, I was racing through the book, cheering Alex on (in my head) and when I thought back to who Alex had been I was glad I got to share that journey with him. The battle scenes/action scenes are so well written I was practically skipping words in my excitement. The book is hugely visual, I never once felt that I couldn't imagine what a character or a room looked like. It springs to life from the page and becomes almost like a movie where you forget you're reading and plunge straight into the world of The Awakening. I've always loved this genre, but I really like how this book moves away from the (let's admit it slightly cliched) Vampire world and into a much cooler wider supernatural plane with faeries and skinshifters and stuff.

All in all I laughed, I cried, I raced through the scenes in suspense. What more can you ask for? Highly recommended and looking forward to the next ones in the series!
