One of the most famous of British cars, the diminutive but robust 750 cc Austin Seven, introduced in 1922, changed the course of automobile design and proved the viability of the small-capacity four-cylinder car. The salvation of the Austin company, it was aimed at families who might otherwise have travelled by motorcycle and sidecar, and it remained in production until 1939. The Seven performed as well on the race track as it did on the road and inspired a team of magnificent twin overhead camshaft single-seaters. It survives in respectable numbers to provide new generations of enthusiasts with a practical, economical car to run, race and restore.
About the Author
Jonathan Wood, the former owner of an Austin Seven, won the Pierre Dreyfus Awards for his acclaimed series of articles in 'Classic Cars' magazine about the birth of the model. The author of some thirty books, Wood has twice won the Montague Trophy, awarded by the Guild of Motoring Writers, of which he is a member, and twice received the prestigious Cugnot Award from the Society of Automotive Historians.

At 32 pages this is a very small book about Austin Sevens but it packs in many facts, figures, explanations and pictures. Much of the material is covered by the RJ Wyatt book: Austin Seven, the motor for the millions 1922-39 but there is new material from an interview by the author of draughtsman Stanley Edge who worked with Herbert Austin from the original 'sketch on a billiard table' in 1921 and who designed its engine. There are also some reference to more recent events than those covered in Mr Wyatt's book. A useful little book and well worth the money.

'Pay your money and make your choice' There are some quite expensive books that deal with single car models such as the Austin Seven but if you want something concise yet complete that is easy on the pocket and bookshelf then I heartily recommend this little book. It has plenty of technical detail, some good photographs, covers most versions of the little car and has a readable potted history. Excellent!

An interesting and informative summary of the production of the Austin Seven from its planning and introduction in 1922 to the final models produced in 1939. There is a good selection of photographs spanning the car's production and many line drawings of the mechanics, including Herbert Austin's preliminary sketches. The book concludes with a very good summary of the Racing Sevens, again including an excellent selection of photographs. For a such s slim volume, there is a wealth of information within its covers.
PLEASE NOTE: The illustration of the book on the website is not the cover as provided. The one illustrated has a photograph of the second prototype, whereas the one provided, a 2008 print, has a picture of a Ruby saloon from a mid '30s brochure.

A cheap booklet but interesting to read the history of the mark.The technically minded will need a more substantial publication.

A useful introduction for the new Austin Seven enthusiast.But leaves you with lots of questions and wanting to know more. Perhaps a little light weight.
