Product Description

Review

It will deepen the appreciation of these gorgeous plants among their existing fans and enthuse new growers..." 'The Irish Garden', December 2009.

Product Description

This delightful book presents the history and development of the Auricula to both the casual reader and enthusiast. It sets out both traditional and more recent methods of cultivation, how to exhibit the plants, how they are judged, breeding new varieties and how to deal with pests and diseases. More than 200 varieties both old and new are discussed in some detail and numerous coloured illustrations are included. In writing the book, Allan Guest has drawn on over thirty years experience of growing, showing, breeding and judging the plants. Having known and exchanged views with many of the leading personalities of the time, he is able to provide insights into both plants and breeders. He currently sits on the committees of both the Midlands and West and the Northern Sections of the National Auricula and Primula Society.

This book is really a pleasure to own, whether you're an auricula expert or just are a fan of these wonderful little plants. The book is a masterpiece and has everything you could possibly want to know about auriculas and is splendidly illustrated, too, as it should be. I'd highly recommend it to any gardener, "armchair" or hands-on.

My goodness, what a bargain! Practically every page is furnished with flowers that smile and laugh at you, many with their coquettish faces all powdered with farina; as though they have just put down and hidden away their compacts, and they are ready, prepared to go to the ball --with you!

The 'Little Light Botany' chapter really is a lovely, light and easy wee lesson: It is Biology made simple, such that it might happily and safely be used as a light biology lesson on reproduction anywhere, and with anyone.

Excellent chapters on Cultivation; an explanation of Varieties, and one on Exhibiting, and much, much more make this a very worthwhile book to own.

We are indebted to Mr Guest for the untold hours he gave to producing what is undoubtedly a superb book and a remarkable labour of love.

Do you know --I think that what I have written adds up to a sound, all round recommendation; --and what is more: A Really Very Good Book is what it is!

SIMPLY THE BEST 4 Jan 2012
By Horner
Format:Hardcover
Just the best book in print on auriculas at present - written by someone who has huge experience in growing, showing and exhibiting the plants. Mr Guest's research has turned up new material for the history section, and there are beautiful photographs throughout. We are brought bang up to date with auricula varieties available now, and the beautiful possibilities for the future. Comprehensive and invaluable to all who love these flowers as well as the traditions and history associated with them.
