This new play by Peter Morgan is truly fantastic. Even if you ignore all the media hype of Helen Mirren resuming her role as the Queen again, it is still a marvel. Very witty, particularly from the Queen herself, and i was also surprised with how 'up to date' it was, with a mention of the pregnancy of the Duchess of Cambridge- whether this was a hasty addition or well timed speculation, who knows!

It's very much worth reading the introduction by Morgan which offers a great insight into the play's conception. What I particularly enjoyed was how 'The Audience' is not a linear play in the way that it moves chronologically through all of the Prime Ministers, but hops around between different men and decades, it made the plot a lot more unpredictable. If anyone is thinking it will be similar to the feature film 'The Queen'- there are similarities in terms of her character a dry sense of humour, but Blair isn't featured as one of the PM's, so there is no repetition whatsoever.

Starting with Major and his uneasiness with power, to when she begins to nod off whilst listening to Cameron, to giggling with Brown about Cherie Blair, Morgan effectively portrays the Queen as a normal person like many of us and so is guaranteed to get a laugh out of any reader, regardless of your political viewpoints!

I saw Helen Mirren in The Audience on Broadway April 2015. She provided the best live performance I have seen in my 70+ years and will ever see again! With any play, one misses parts of the dialogue so reading the script has been wonderful. Some parts I have read many times. Although fiction, this script offers insight into Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers she knew. The cover artwork is brilliant!!! Jains, Tallahassee, Florida, USA

An excellent play, currently showing at NT Live across the country with Helen Mirren- I very much hope for a DVD version soon.
I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of Wilson as the Queen's favourite, how the play deals with the death of Thatcher and I found each of the Prime Minister's to be incredibly true to character. Clearly this play has been written with a great deal of research. Very useful for students studying the history of the period, such as myself; it was invaluable for really getting a feel of the political atmosphere.
The best play of the 21st century?
