Book Description

The Audience by Peter Morgan imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the prime ministers of Downing Street and their Queen. From Winston Churchill to David Cameron, their private conversations are sometimes intimate and sometimes explosive.

Product Description

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve prime ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace, a meeting like no other in British public life. It is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses.

The Audience breaks this contract of silence. It imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each prime minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.

From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next prime minister.

The Audience by Peter Morgan premiered at the Gielgud Theatre, London, in March 2013.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal play 2 July 2013
An excellent play, currently showing at NT Live across the country with Helen Mirren- I very much hope for a DVD version soon.
I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of Wilson as the Queen's favourite, how the play deals with the death of Thatcher and I found each of the Prime Minister's to be incredibly true to character. Clearly this play has been written with a great deal of research. Very useful for students studying the history of the period, such as myself; it was invaluable for really getting a feel of the political atmosphere.
The best play of the 21st century?
