About the Author

Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) was born and raised in Nova Scotia, where he practised law and was involved with local politics before becoming a judge. He was a prolific writer and, following the publication of several histories, met with popular acclaim with The Clockmaker (1837). He retired to England, where he continued to write, and served as a member of parliament for Launceston. He died in 1865, and is buried in Isleworth Churchyard.
