ok ok call me a stickler for authenticity + detail but this 5 cd box set (ooh gosh!) is nothing more than a poor man's casual Coltrane fan's cash-in. the 5 cd s contain barely 40 minutes per cd + thus could be released on 3 cds (but that wouldn't impress potential casual jazz fans) without original artwork , sleeve notes or sense of yes - authenticity.
there seems to be a flurry of budget re-release labels at the moment re-packaging classic jazz lp s and this on the Not Now Music label is one of them .certainly the music by Coltrane and his atlantic label era emerging "classic" quartets cannot be faulted. the milt jackson + coltrane lp included here is novel + not often heard but the central question remains : why bother buying this lack lustre non-orignal artwork collection when for not too much more, you can buy the far superior ORIGINALS with the extra studio tracks also. also atlantic original lps "Coltrane plays the Blues" a superb lp AND "Coltrane's Sound" could both easily have been included onto the 5 cds here. but weren't. and thus this isn't a complete Atlantic box set..
furthermore - Coltrane's finest era was on the impulse label anyway. not atlantic.
there WAS some very fine jazz recorded by JC on atlantic, no doubt BUT the real deal Coltrane was on impulse.
avoid + go for the original atlantic versions. the music is flawless hard /post-bop 60's jazz. the cash-in re-release here leaves a bad taste in the mouth..go for the far better 5 cd atlantic series for the same price (amazon isdn:B0050I2OXI) for the original packaging etc. job done ..
