"It is inspirational, fun and true!" "No matter how much time you spend on a rowing machine, the real test is how you cope with being on the open water for the couple of months it is going to take." North West Evening Mail

Product Description

After two years of preparation and training, Norman Beech and his son James became the first British father and son team to row across the Atlantic in an incredible 3,000 mile rowing challenge, that took them from Tenerife to Antigua in a 24 foot rowing boat across the second largest piece of water on earth. In the 82 day row, which also saw James celebrate his 19th birthday and become the youngest man to row across the Atlantic, the Beech Boys kept an online blog and a ship's log to record every second of their adventure. The memories of their voyage tell the lows of the trip, but also the highs of being followed by whales and dolphins, the fun, humour and of course the close bond of their father and son relationship. Packed with photographs of their time at sea, it is a story of adventure and committment. However, they had a big reason behind their adventure. With Norman's dreams including helping to equip other people and leaving a lasting impact, he decided that he would row the Atlantic with James in aid of WaterAid, a charity which enables the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygeine education. The proceeds of their book will go to support WaterAid's work.

My husband decided to write a book about the adventure he and our son had when rowing across the Atlantic ocean. It serves to be a permanent reminder of all the details that went into the planning and realisation of the dream he had when he was a younger man! You forget so easily what was involved in the 2 years of planning for this event, until you read it - and all the memories flood back again .... the bag packing sessions, the ongoing encouraging media contact with radio, newspapers and TV, the many people we met, the amazing support and encouragement we had from friends and family and total strangers, the selling of raffle tickets, the planning of the route, the planning of the accommodation in La Gomera and Antigua, the five weeks I had in Antigua waiting for them (well someone had to do it!!), the concern about the length of time it was all taking due to the unpredictable weather patterns, etc etc

I think sometimes the rest of the family in these challenges can be forgotten due to the concentration of focus on the challenge ahead - so it was a lovey touch that Norman dedicated this book to me and our daughter, neither of us great lovers of water and unable to comprehend why on earth they would want to row across an ocean!! I am so proud of my boys - they are amazing!

As I type this I have just had a phonecall from them - this time they were ringing from John O'Groats, having cycled up the length of the country from Lands End in just over 4 days, on a tandem!! ... as you do ....

Un-putdownable! 26 Jan 2012
By Jane
Format:Paperback
To be honest, I bought this book because the proceeds go to Water Aid - a very worthy charity. I expected it to be a bit technical and 'bloke-y' but once I started reading I really couldn't put it down.
It truly is an inspirational read which gives an insight into the logistics and preparation required beforehand and also the highs and lows of the journey and in particular how Norman and James helped each other through those lows. Well done to them both - its a tremendous achievement and a tremendous book!
