Product Description

Product Description

Athletes come to the practice of yoga with muscle tightness from hours spent training and little time in their weekly schedules for lengthy sessions. At the height of the season, they often disappear from yoga classes altogether in favour of demanding sport-specific training, yet it is then that yoga can be most beneficial. Sage Rountree makes it easy for athletes to reap the benefits of yoga year-round. "The Athlete's Pocket Guide to Yoga" is set up to complement a rigorous training schedule. In this book, athletes will find: 5-minute warm-ups to prepare for daily workouts; strength sessions for the off-season and base periods; flexibility sessions for when training grows more demanding, including 20-minute flexibility routines designed to follow workouts; and, focus sessions incorporating breath exercises and meditation to improve recovery and sharpen mental toughness for competition. Armed with this pocket guide, athletes can incorporate yoga into their training all year long. A spiral binding makes it easy to display pages during each routine, and attractive colour photographs fluidly detail the individual poses. Sage also includes tips to simplify trickier poses or vary the routine from one session to the next. Careful consideration of the athlete's needs has earned Sage Rountree a committed following, and her newest book delivers a practical approach to yoga that will make good athletes better. The book is spiral-bound with colour photos throughout.

Gets into all of the tight spots 10 July 2009
By B. L. Briggs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Spiral-bound
I wasn't sure I would want to do yoga from a book, but the pictures are clear and concise and having some moderate yoga experience helps. But being a book I can carry it to any place in the house to get some quiet yoga time.

I have been doing a yoga video to try to stretch out my tight hips and lower back, it was good overall but it wasn't helping where I needed it.
This book has very specific flows for post swim, post bike and post run workouts that really target those tight spots. They even worked on some spots I didn't realize were tight! Especially my hamstrings and my achilles. I am now considering buying the companion video.

Best Yoga Book 10 Dec 2009
By M. Wolfe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Spiral-bound
This has to be the best book on yoga I've come across in years. When I'm doing an activity like yoga, I really don't want to read long prose on how to do something. I just want to see it, then do it. And that's exactly how this book is presented. There's a brief guide for absolute beginners at the beginning, a quick guide to things you might need - such as, how to pick a good mat - but then it goes into page after page of image sequences about poses (5-10 minutes), then a section towards the end on full routines that can take an hour (or more). It's a great mix&match guide to build your own routines, or use theirs, depending on your needs and skill and time restraints. It also has a spiral binding which is great to just lay open when you're trying things out. I definitely recommend this to athletes and non-athletes like myself.

Athletes Pocket Guide to Yoga 28 Oct 2009
By E. Sanford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have always done a little yoga, learned from ballet. I recently started up road cycling and this book has really helped! As I am not in ballet anymore I do not stretch like I used to and I knew I had to start again. I don't know if this book would be good for a true beginner, but for someone who already knows about stretches (and proper form - very important) this is a good simple book. I especially like that there are different levels, from those with very little flexibility yet, to those that are rubber bands. Doing the stretches after cycling really makes a difference the next day - I am also noticing that I am not getting neck pain from work (typing, computer) which is a very pleasant unexpected bonus!
