GRAVEL VOICED STORY TELLER 29 May 2003
By Pieter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I am always impressed by Tom Waits' descriptive ability - the way he paints vignettes of people and places and moods. His early work on the Asylum label is generally more accessible than later stuff like Bone Machine and here the listener finds Waits in a gentle frame of mind on a tasty selection of mainly soft ballads and jazzy numbers like Blue Valentines and the duet I Never Talk To Strangers. I prefer his country style ballads so Tom Traubert's Blues (Waltzing Matilda) and Ruby's Arms are my favourites. This is a good introduction to his bluesy musical vision contained in that gravely voice and his evocative story songs, but I think it would have been better if masterpieces like The Piano's Been Drinking (Not Me), I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You, Old 55 and Saving All My Love For You had been included. I also recommend his albums Heartattack And Vine and Swordfishtrombones.

Questionable selection 10 Jan 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a "best songs" collection from Tom Wait's early years: 'bout enough said. However, it's missing (my own personal) favorites such as Ol' 55, The Piano Has Been Drinking, and Heart Attack and Vine. That said, it's still probably more accessable to novice Tom Waits listeners than the new greatest hits collection, Used Songs.

pictures are perfect 29 Dec 2005
By .Richard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
tom waits an artist i've heard of.never heard any of his songs just heard about his brilliance, but until the other day i picked up this CD with the diner picture on the front i was inticed and wonder what excactly was on the disc that seemed to represent so much too other reviewers on amazon,..so that night as i was lying in bed i put this in my portable cd player

and my first was reaction was depressing..but after the fourth track i adored this album..

it made me think of a 40's scene in a club somewhere you know the scene were a guy in a long over coat with a cigar balancing between his lips..while smoke fills the air and your observing while tom waits drapes his words like little tiny knives

an album i appreciate and i can see were mark lanegan has got his style of music and how he looks like from the master of the gravel voice and the poetic provoking images MR.tom waits
