This is great movie, a great comedy and much more. This is not just another Whoopi Goldberg comedy but a tale of survival when the chips are down. The lacing of hard life lessons with humour makes this a must see by everyone who not only loves comedies but meaningful movies. To have the courage to stand up for yourself, face being knifed in the back, quit your job and build up a firm from nothing in a finance world of wall street dominated by men and even resort to inventing a fictitious male partner to stay in the game makes the Character played by WHOOOPI not only gutsy but a survivor. I found this story line riveting and filled with courage and valuable life lessons. I recommend it not just for the great comedy but also for the depth and meaning conveyed in the movie.

What can I say? This has to be one of the most remarkable and outstanding pieces of work in Whoopi Golburge's career. Her capability to play a member of the oposite sex is absolutly outstanding and hillarious!

I went to see this with my freind for his Birth day a few years back. I find it just as good now as I did when I first saw it. The thing that makes this film so good is it's so easy to get involved in. There are so many ocasions where you laugh at and with Whoopi Goldberg! As well as having that laughter side to it there is the disapointment and desperation suprisingly these three things mixed together make it a 5 star film! Very easy to say that this is one of my all time favourite films and I will enjoy it on video for many more years to come! It's an espeacially "must see with the family!" type of film!

I really do miss these fun feel good movies and, The Assosiate, is one of the best in it's genre, for it's time. The film basically follows Whoopi Goldberg's (The Color Purple)character, Laurel Ayres, who is a sucessfull executive who advises clients on buisness/stocks etc... who gets stiffed over a big promotion in favour of her male prodigy Frank Peterson (Tim Daly -Wings) who works off Laurels ideas, so she feels betrayed & decides to leave the big boys firm & start out on her own.

As you'd guess, the story revolves around sexism (some racism too), in that no one will work with Laurel as she is a woman, but she desperatley needs to get some clients as she has put her fathers apartment block, which he worked his life for, up for collateral. So cunningly to create the right image that people want, she invents a fake, VERY elusive partner, Mr. Cutty, which eventually helps her get her foot in the door & build up her investment firm with the assistance of under rated secretary Sally Dugan (Dianne Weist -The Lost Boys). But it's not all smooth sailing. Eventually of course, this Mr.Cutty has to show his face, so In the film we do see Whoopi in drag as an old white man, which is basically a really cheap looking varient taken from the great Mrs Doubtfire with Robin Williams.

I saw this film years ago and loved it then, seeing it again met all my expectations and more! It is not only funny and brilliantly witty, but a fantastically clever comment on many social inequalities.
