Product Description

Review

'This book is a positive addition to Asperger Syndrome (AS)/Neurotypical (NT) relationship literature providing not only information, but also useful tools and strategies to deal with typical AS/NT issues. Maxine has included excellent definitions and explanations of the differences between the AS and NT partner and places strong emphasis on the fact that being different doesn't mean being wrong. We would recommend this workbook to AS/NT couples seeking practical solutions to many of the day-to-day issues that this type of relationship brings. This book will really make a difference to those who want to live more harmoniously together.' --- Sarah Hendrickx and Keith Newton, authors of Asperger Syndrome - A Love Story

Product Description

Asperger Syndrome (AS) can affect some of the fundamental ingredients required to make relationships work, such as emotional empathy and communication. This workbook provides couples affected by AS with strategies that will benefit their relationship together, and their family as a whole. With candid advice, activities and worksheets, the book explores a variety of approaches that couples can use to improve their relationship. Whilst acknowledging that all relationships are different and each needs to be viewed as a unique case, the author identifies specific issues that can be problematic in an Asperger relationship. The book provides a range of ideas based on years of research and counselling experience and covers crucial areas such as verbal and non-verbal communication, sexual issues, parenting and home life. This practical book is designed for use by couples and families affected by AS, either on their own or in conjunction with a counsellor.

Very useful 3 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after my other half was assessed for AS and seems more than likely he has it.

There was a lot on the market, but the reviews were good so I thought I'd try this.

I'd definitely recommend it to other couples, the exercises are very useful - particularly things like writing a list of desired gifts and surprises for your partner to pick from (it beats getting nothing!).
Some of it wasn't all that relevant to us, mainly the bits about getting angry and having fights (maybe we could do with advice on how to have these!), but the stuff on social difficulties was very good.

I particularly like the style of writing, not too technical but not dumbing down either. The analogy of an eagle and a zebra was brilliant.

We may well be accessing some counselling with Maxine Easton, but in the meantime I'd definitely recommend her book.

I have Asperger's Syndrome, am married with a young son.

The Asperger Couple's Workbook, published just under a year ago is by far the best practical advice book for couple's that I've read. It is written in simple to read sections where one is able to dip into and out of and refer back to time and time again.

It gives practical easy to follow advice and activities to bridge the chasm of the dysfunctional communication that lies at the heart between the Asperger and their NT spouse. Packed full of strategies and pathways that will ease the conflict and stress points and enable the relationship to improve.

If one is looking for a self help book or a book on improving a NT/AS marriage/long term relationship then this is the book.

The only caveat I make is that it is important to first understand what the basic fundamentals of Asperger's is, how Asperger characteristics manifest itself before getting down to the nitty-gritty of improving and developing a NT/AS marriage.

The books title suggests that it is intended for couple's only, which would be a great shame as I personally recommend this book for all but the very youngest age group, the information contained there in is that good, helpful and important and can easily be transferred and interchanged to a parent/child relationship.

I thoroughly recommend this book, it's worth every penny, the book is as good as that. To compliment this book I also recommend - Asperger Syndrome and Long-Term Relationships by Ashley Stanford.

Excellent service in getting the book & it has already proved beneficial in providing worksheets for asperger clients during counselling.
