The First Edition of The Ascent of Everest was published by Hodder & Stoughton, of London, in 1953. This was November 1953. The second impression was December 1953, the third impression in January 1954, the fourth in April 1954. There were various other editions. The First American edition was not published until 1954 and was similar to the British edition a good solid Octavo size with 300 pages but had a different title "The Conquest of Everest".

The Ascent of Everest was written in one month by Sir John Hunt, the leader of the expedition, in order to satisfy the immediate demand around the world for the story of the British team's success. Chapter 16 is Sir Edmund Hillary's stirring account of the final part of the climb, and the appendices are by members of the expedition.

The contents of the 1953 First Edition (and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th impressions) include:

* 56 photographic illustrations (eight of which are in colour including a COLOUR frontispiece of Tenzing on the Summit of Everest, 29th May, 1953) Some of the cheaper editions, Book Club and the like have less illustrations and are smaller/lightweight productions.
* line drawings and maps

The contents are set out in six parts with 18 chapters and a further 9 appendices:

* Foreword by H.R.H.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring 26 Aug 2007
I took this book on holiday with me. Interested in Everest and those that have climbed her over the years.

From the start, this book is well written. John Hunt was there and you get to feel just a small part just what they went through in the Himalaya. The other striking thing is how `primitive' their equipment was and the challenges they faced in the weeks it took them to even arrive at the mountain.

This is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time and with John Hunt's brilliant commentary the reader gets an amazing insight into these `Heroes' lives, ambitions and disappointments. A truly inspiring account.........
