The DVD cover bears a bold declaration "From the Academy Award Winning Producer of The Last Emperor & Platoon." As I had watched and enjoyed both of these films I did not hesitate to purchase the DVD. I was horribly disappointed. The first problem that I noted was the sound quality of the DVD. It kept cutting out; leaving certain of the characters, quite literally, speechless. Other problems then became apparent. The background music was sickly, over-sentimental and far too loud, often drowning out the dialogue. Two distinguished actors, Martin Landau and Judy Parfitt, play the roles of the Krauzenberg couple; the rich Central European Jews for whom the Aryan Couple work. I expected stellar performances. Again, I was disappointed. Landau put no effort into his acting at all, displaying as much emotion as a wooden puppet. Judy Parfitt played her part as though Frau Krauzenberg was a native of the Home Counties. Speaking to Heinrich Himmler she expressed her fear of someone called "Iceman". This turned out to be Eichmann. Iceman, she feared, would not honour Himmler's promise to release the Krauzenberg family and would deport them to the "Owse-Witch" death camp. (Owsewitch is, presumably, somewhere near Ipswich or perhaps Sandwich.) The storyline is ridiculous, becoming increasingly so as the film progresses. The ending seemed horribly contrived and not in the least bit credible. The film is entirely lifeless. No one involved seemed to be putting any real effort into the production; the actors having become, I suspect, as bored with the whole enterprise as I had.(I have a mental image, which I cannot shake, of the whole cast - acting and production - hanging their heads in collective shame at the thought of their involvement with this abomination.) Stay well clear of this film; do not waste your time or your money. You will bitterly regret the loss of both.
