Product Description

Product Description

This volume surveys the highly influential Arts and Crafts design movement--which embraced architecture, furniture, glass, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and books--in Britain, America and Europe. Although the styles adopted by the movement were diverse, its leading architects, artists and craft-designers, including William Morris, Frank Lloyd Wright, Josef Hoffman and Eliel Saarinen, were united in promoting the moral superiority of "honest" design and natural materials in an industrial age. 167 illus., 31 in color.

USEFUL & BEAUTIFUL 10 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
Kaplan and Cumming have compiled a most comprehensive introduction to what Nicholas Pevsner called ' the beginning of a new era in Western art'.In six very readable chapters the trace the source of this influential movement through architecture, design and art in the late Victorian 19th century, including detailed observations of its impact in the USA and on continental Europe.Over 160 illustrations and a helpful bibliography help to make this volume a worthy complement to the World of Art's guide to Art Nouveau.

Basic 2 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
I am presently delving into the Arts and Crafts movement and I started with this book, mainly because it had a low price and I was not sure what to buy. The book is full of facts but it really needs more color photos! It feels a bit old with so many black and white pictures and I have since found other (larger) books with more and better color pictures - books that are also better designed. Why have the cover of an Arts and Crafts book fifty percent solid black?

But it will be a fine basic reference book.

As this was purchased as a present I'm unable to give a direct review but the recipient was genuinely pleased with this well illustrated book which was intended as a handy reference for the subject.
