Product Description

First published in 1940, this is the fifth edition of Ralph Mayer's book. It is designed as a reference guide to the materials necessary for the modern artist. About the Author

Ralph Mayer (1895-1979) was a painter and art conservator. Educated as a chemical engineer, he worked in paint manufacture and studied painting at the Art Students League of New York before going on to teach at Columbia University. He founded the Artists Technical Research Institute in 1959. He is best known as the author of The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques (1940), which is still a point of reference for artists today, and he also wrote The Painter's Craft (1948) and A Dictionary of Art Terms and Techniques (1969). --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This book is extremely authoritative and helpful on the technical aspect of all painting media: I've read my copy to bits--it can become very obsessive, wanting to know all about each pigment, where does that oil come from? can you paint this over that? and so on. It has the answer to any question along these lines, and tells you methodically and carefully how to do any painting operation you might reasonably want to do: how to make your own colours in various media, preparing surfaces and so on. Restoration and printing are quite well covered too.

If you're serious (very serious?) about painting, you'll find this compelling.

this is the book you need if you are wanting ot pursue painting at a serious level. its modern and deals with everything from old style tempera to acrylics and scrutinises every aspect of these styles. i thoroughly recommend this book. it allows people to make their own judgments about formulating a painting ( the author sometimes can come across as being a bit of a killjoy though and i disagree with his views on cotton canvas which is perfectly suitable for average sixed paintings primed with acrylic polymer (gesso)), however it is an excellent book written by a man who did an awful lot of research it seems and is indeed the 'artists bible'

I remember buying a previous edition many years ago and bought this one partly fearing that nothing new might have been added and that it might therefore be out-dated. I shouldn't have worried. There is plenty new in here and modern media are effectively covered as well as the more traditional oils, watercolour, tempera and gouache. It certainly is the sort of book which one can delve in and out of, either reading a chapter or section which is broadly of interest, or digging deeper into the detail of a specific issue. In my opinion the "materials" are handled more effectively than the "techniques", but perhaps I have this view because I find that the latter are better presented with good quality colour illustrations of which this book has none.
My one real criticism is with the manner in which the book is made. Yes it is a weighty tome, but I found it impossible to read without opening the pages wide open, which then immediately badly creases the spine. I haven't had a book which has "damaged" quite so easily as this for a long while and I am only surprised that thus far all the pages haven't fallen out. It's early days (!) but perhaps they won't and the apparent damage to the spine may be cosmetic rather than structual.
Nevertheless, it is a real classic and deserves a place on the bookshelf (or more likely the working desk)of anyone serious about learning the craft behind their art.
