Amazon.co.uk Review

The Artist is a love letter and homage to classic black-and-white silent films. The film is enormously likable and is anchored by a charming performance from Jean Dujardin, as silent movie star George Valentin. In late-1920s Hollywood, as Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he makes an intense connection with Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break. As one career declines, another flourishes, and by channeling elements of A Star Is Born and Singing in the Rain, The Artist tells the engaging story with humour, melodrama, romance, and--most importantly--silence. As wonderful as the performances by Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo (Miller) are, the real star of The Artist is cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman. Visually, the film is stunning. Crisp and beautifully contrasted, each frame is so wonderfully constructed that this sweet and unique little movie is transformed from entertaining fluff to a profound cinematic achievement. --Kira Canny

DVD Description

Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), it seems the sky’s the limit--major movie stardom awaits. The Artist tells the story of their interlinked destinies.

Pure Nostalgia 22 Mar 2012
Format:DVD
I wasn't sure if I'd really enjoy this film? I'm so glad I went. This is not a re-run of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton with those crackly lines running across your screen and fidgety movements and dead pan expressions!
Whilst it captures all of the B&W authenticity in a gloriously crystal clear production it also offers one of our most historically trendy ages which gave us the Charleston, tweed suits, white walled tyres and the glamour of the stars lifestyles and their palatial residences - not for the peasants I know but a great view all the same.
The story line is good if well-worn in Hollywood circles but it undeniably works and then there's that clever little dog!
However, the stars of the show (Jean Dujardin & Berenice Bejo) are totally captivating. It makes you appreciate how good those silent actors had to be when seeing it done in a modern environment.
They were both almost mesmeric to watch. This is pure entertainment rather than just another night at the flicks. It's different and not quite what you thought it would be like. As someone else also reported the audience applauded at the end of our screening too - most odd, but then they'd been caught up in the nostalgia and had just been thoroughly captivated & entertained for an hour and forty minutes. Make sure you see it.
I waivered on whether to give this a four or five star rating? I thought how original it was? Could this have been any better or improved in any way? Having slept on it - of course it's a five star film!

Silent sensation 24 Dec 2011
By Jon Chambers TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
As a trainee projectionist at a small-town French cinema, I naturally get to see quite a few films. Occasionally, they are screened before their UK release. And very occasionally, as here, they are brilliant. In short, it's one of my two recommendations of the year. (The other, incidentally, is Intouchables, another superb film which also suggests that the glory days of French cinema are not all in the past.)

It is vital not to give too much away. Suffice it to say that the plot revolves around the male lead, a silent movie icon (played by Jean Dujardin) and his efforts to cope with dwindling fame brought about by the Hollywood vogue for 'talkies' at the end of the Twenties. Sound is completely alien to his kind of cinema and, of course, being a silent film itself, The Actor shows the world from his perspective. But The Actor isn't completely mute, as we hear on just a couple of occasions. One instance comes right at the end and explains ... well, something quite important.

I'd never heard of the principal actors. Both are utterly captivating. Director Michel Hazanavicius (incidentally, the husband of the female lead, Berenice Bejo) has apparently wanted to make a silent movie for ages. The long gestation period shows in this thoughtful, clever homage to Hollywood's silent era. Implausibly, a modern film without (much) sound or colour maintains viewer interest throughout. It is witty, impossibly romantic, intriguing and, above all, a must-see for anyone who's losing their love of cinema. What should be nothing more than an interesting idea or a bit of a cliché (note the fire, dog and policeman episode), is in fact the absolute opposite: fresh and original. And one of the best films of the year.

A delight! 12 Jan 2012
Format:DVD
Black and white! A silent movie! It all sounds a bit tricksy and knowing and contrived. But it's not - it's a simple delight. Girl meets boy, girl loses boy... and I won't give away the ending. The creamy black and white filming looks exquisite, as does Berenice Bejo, the female lead. Just buy it and wallow. It's a joy!

Boring, predictable, utterly uninteresting.
The worst about this movie is not its being so pretentious, it's its being so boring and predictable. I don't see the point of telling this utterly uninteresting story, really. Read more
