Product Description

Reigning supreme for almost a decade as ITV's biggest comedian, Arthur Haynes was one of the most influential and popular comics that television has ever seen. His shows remained firmly in the top ten until his untimely death in 1966 robbed the world of a comedy genius. Lack of repeats ensured that subsequent generations were denied Haynes' comedic brilliance - until now.

Featuring wickedly funny scripts from Alf Garnett creator Johnny Speight, they invariably drew on the familiar class antagonism which he would hone to perfection on Till Death Us Do Part. Haynes' robust working-class delivery was inspired never more so than in the character of Hobo Haynes, a belligerent, heavily decorated tramp fond of recounting tales of patriotic bravery whilst being 'up to me neck in muck and bullets'.

This fourth great collection of episodes returns him to his rightful place among the comedy greats.

I can't get enough of these old shows, each release just keeps getting better! Volume four (or series eleven) is my favourite so far. Originally broadcast from December 1962, the picture and sound quality is surprisingly good. There is a much better opening sequence with a catchy signature tune. Haynes is full of confidence and along with the return of Nicholas Parsons and regular Leslie Noyes, we see more characters start to appear! A very young Michael Caine turns up in the first episode!
For me the supporting cast make the sketches even more enjoyable and funnier. Dermot Kelly as 'Irish' is the perfect scruffy companion for Haynes tramp character to bounce off. The formidable Rita Webb shouts and shoves in as their 'ratbag' landlady and Patricia Hayes is always hilarious in whatever role, just as she stands out in some of the Hancock episodes.
Also Johnny Speight's scripts are on top form. I am a big fan of his other success 'Till Death Us Do Part' and as the early episodes aren't available on DVD, this is definately the next best thing.
As the cover states Arthur Haynes is a forgotten comedy king, hopefully this collection will start to change that!

Volume 1V of this superb series is as good as all the others. Second to Norman Wisdom Mr Haynes was the best comedian this country has ever had.

The mighty Arthur Haynes in a fourth volume of a cool dozen of his very funny early 60s TV shows.
