Tactics and exercises are provided on idea generation and development, character building, plotting, drafting, querying and submitting, dealing with rejection, coping with envy and unrealistic expectations, and much more.

This book should be titled "The Must Have Book For Writers".
It's informative, funny, easy to comprehend and teaches you while making you smile. What more could you want from a book?
There is a wealth of information in those pages, and I recommend it highly.

The rather marvellous James Scott Bell has done it again with another must-have book for people who love to write. Along with Plot & Structure and Revision & Self-Editing, this little book really deserves a place on your bookshelf. Full of nuggets of advice - and that's one of the reasons why this book is so great, you can dip in and out of it - such as 'when you are stuck, call on a word and its cousins' and 'finish your novel, because you learn more that way than any other' JSB has once again proved himself the writer's best friend. And the nicest thing about him is that the advice he offers is actually helpful, and given in a no-nonsense kind of a way. Forget it if you want someone to tell you how special you are now that you are (hopefully) joining the ranks of the literati. Buy it if you are serious about your writing career. Own the set of three, and I guarantee you that they will be your most read books.

Brilliant! 28 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
As good as 'Plot and Structure' this book is an absolute must in my opinion. It's not for the complete beginner, more for if you've got a few stories down on paper already.

James Scott Bell's strength lies in his ability to motivate you to write without fear. This book is all about just getting on with it but it's also full of invaluble advice as well. For example, in one chapter he suggests picking up a thesaurus when you're stuck for character background and let your imagination run away with you after landing on a random word. Great idea.

My favourite line from this book though is: "Poor backstory. It gets no respect these days." This made me laugh out loud.
