By The Truth TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a brilliant book that lots of people can enjoy for lots of different reason. It offers a trip down memory lane and is a must for anyone who loves art, design and illustration.

If you grew up as a boy reading 'Commando' or any similar war comic, you'll instantly remember the unique style of illustration found on their incredible covers and within their action-packed pages, that helped bring the stories within alive.

The art on the pages of those little booklets was distinct and unique, and this book brings together some excellent examples of the genre and should be swiftly added to your bookshelf or collection of art reference books.

The pages and all the illustrations within, are vibrant, colourful and packed full of expression and emotion. And each piece of art on every single page is a mini masterpiece in it's own right .

This book itself is chunky and thick offering 100s of examples of work in a genre that is truly incredible, yet so under appreciated and sadly forgotten.

You'll find selections of covers, 4 to a page, as well as big, huge, double page spreads of truly amazing artwork, and it's a crying shame this artistry isn't more widely appreciated.

The wonderful and expressive scenes depicted so perfectly within this book look great on its glossy, quality pages - with all the colours and pictures being vibrant and well produced.

Energy, movement, fear, anger, heroism, adrenaline, carnage - everything you'd expect to experience or see in war is here to see in this book, captured perfectly within the scenes on each page. It's a truly excellent collection of staggering art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Artists on Parade 20 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Good selection of cover art from Air Ace, Battle, War and War at Sea Picture Libraries (pocket-size war comics of the 60s/70s). For those of us who had them as boys, it's a trip down memory lane; for those who didn't, it's a chance to appreciate some truly great illustration in the genre. An interesting aspect of the book is that some of the art is shown in its original format, i.e. as painted boards marked up for subsequent transformation into covers by the addition of mastheads and titling. Ironically, for British war comics, it was Italian artists who dominated the scene at the time and Jordi Penalva is probably the best of those shown. Britain's own Graham Coton gave him a run for his money, though, and is well represented here. I've docked it a star as there is nothing from Commando pocket library, whose artist Jose Jorge is my favourite and I would have liked to have seen some internal, b/w strip illustrations as well - as I did at the N.A.M. comics exhibition in summer 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good collection 11 Oct 2009

Format:Paperback
of cover art by war comic books. A bath in the time for "old boys" with also in the memory some classic comics, "made" by heroes, simple warriors, sacrifice and blood depicted with "simple plot" histories on WW2.
