Product Description

Bassist, Al Swainger alongside an excellent group that includes reeds master Alan Barnes on alto saxophone, pays homage to one of the greatest saxophonists in jazz - Art Pepper.

Art Pepper's compositions, many of them tinged with Latin influences, and the recordings of his poignant, emotive playing still speak with an immediacy and directness that attracts a wide range of listeners. His playing always dazzled from his earliest, virtuosic, rhythmically daring style, to the darker hues of his almost disturbing later work, when, after years of incarceration and involvement with drugs, he had honed his style into one of overwhelming emotional intensity.

Bassist, Al Swainger, a fine instrumentalist and relative newcomer to the scene, formed 'The Art Trip' to celebrate music from all periods of Art's extraordinary career. He chose a selection of Art's compositions and balanced them with several standards that the altoist really made his own. Craig Milverton, on piano, has always been a fine trio pianist and he really shines on this recording, both in his comping duties and in his inspired soloing. Nick Millward on drums really worked at getting an individual approach on each track, finding his own way through the material. Alan Barnes on alto has always been hugely influenced by Art's playing, and is in inspired form in this setting, bringing out the essence of the master, without sacrificing his own individuality.

Personnel: Alan Barnes (alto saxophone), Craig Milverton (piano), Al Swainger (double bass), Nick Millward (drums)

5.0 out of 5 stars A trip worth taking 1 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD
Having collected over the years a large collection of cd's by the brilliant Alan Barnes, i must say i put this particular one a the very top.Being a long time admirer of the late great Art Pepper, this cd was made for me.The concept for the cd was the bassist Al Swaingers, who throughout this disc swings like the clappers and picked all the tunes and transcribed all the music. The tunes selected cover a large period of Arts life and make a very well balanced selection.
The pianist Craig Milverton, should be more well known to the jazz public then he is,and plays wonderfully,be it a ballad or up-tempo number he really shines throughout with relaxed fluency and qualified inventiveness. The drum chair is taken by Nick Millward, and i must confess is a new name to me, but is none the worse for that, he understands this style of jazz and is never over bearing and makes the cd all the better for it.Alan is in his element playing this music, being a great Art Pepper fan Alan plays with great feeling and emotion throughout but is never a slavish copy and his interpretations of each piece still retain the Barnes sound.
If like me you like good modern jazz and love Art pepper go out and buy this Cd or better still catch Alan at one of his many live gigs throughout the country and purchase one from him,as the cd is issued on Alan's own cd label.

I'm not a musician, far from it and my knowledge of Art Pepper is limited but I really like music. This is an album you can play over and over and not get bored or frustrated. It soothes my brain and makes me smile. There are some enjoyable solos but with none of that 'self indulgance' found with some jazz. If you like music you shouldn't be disappointed:-)
