Product Description

The Art of Tinkering Every day, there's something new and wildly wonderful out there that someone has made by hand--a city built out of 100,000 toothpicks, a musical instrument that's powered by the ocean, or a pop-up book that lights up, too. In "The Art of Tinkering," you'll be introduced to the individuals behind these and many more marvelous works, find out how they create, and get inspired to start tinkering yourself."The Art of Tinkering" is a collection of exhibits, artwork, and projects that celebrate a whole new way to learn, in which people create their own knowledge through making and doing, working with readily available materials, getting their hands dirty, collabor...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected 23 Mar 2014
By Marte - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
When I saw this book, I thought it was about, well, tinkering. Pages of projects to construct and tinker with--especially because you can use the cover and a 9 volt battery to light up an LED bulb. But that's not what it's about. It's a book about the Tinkering Studio in the Exploratorium, plus bios of a number of people who have created interesting "stuff" by tinkering. That bulb-lighting cover is the only thing the reader gets instructions for.

I think I'll probably donate it to our local public library. Nothing wrong with the book itself, it just wasn't what I thought I was buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book rules. 5 Feb 2014
By eaclark - Published on Amazon.com
I picked up a copy of the Art of Tinkering while visiting the Exploratorium a few weeks back and am planning on ordering copies as gifts for my more tech savvy / artistic friends and family. The spreads are beautiful and the book is worth a read even if you aren’t a tinkerer, because the connection between technology and art is so cool! It’s amazing to see what these people can do with cardboard and and stuffed animals, I stand in jealous awe.

5.0 out of 5 stars art teacher 17 Feb 2014

WoW! As a middle school art teacher looking to incorporate "STEM" into my classroom, this is the book for me. Profiles individuals that are learning by play. If you love the Exploratorium site on the internet, you will love this book. My students went crazy when I brought it to class!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of examples and people, not much else 22 Mar 2014
By Matt Foerschler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I guess I was expecting a bit more in the way of a technical kick in the seat of the pants than this turned out to be. Don't get me wrong, this has lots of examples of people tinkering their projects, but a little bit of this goes a long way for me. I've been tinkering since I was 7 or 8 (yup, 50 years now), so I was hoping to get back to more of that and expecting this book to help shine some light on a path. I guess in a way it does, but like I said, I expected more. Still, 4 stars ain't a bad rating. It's just not a 5 star book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Starter dough for your own tinkering 26 Feb 2014
By Cris Benton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The Art of Tinkering describes a playful world of invention and making. In part about material properties and emerging technologies, the book also looks over the shoulder of tinkerers as they deconstruct, reimagine, and invent with whimsy and purpose. It is my favorite type of book where each turn of the page makes me want to head to the workshop.

Bravo to Ms. Wilkinson, Mr. Petrich and the Tinkering Studio!
