Product Description

"The Art of Throwing" examines the practical nature of throwing pots and provides a historical background to act as inspiration. This new paperback edition analyses throwing as a language of expression, exploring ideas and how to develop them. Step-by-step photographs support the novice, while lavish illustrations and interviews with established craftspeople lead the more confident potter to explore new avenues of creativity.

The Art of Throwing 1 July 2003
Format:Hardcover
This book is a 'must' for anyone who wants to embark on throwing pots. The pictures are clear, and Alexs' text to go with the pictures make the instructions simple and clear. It is not just a 'ceramicist' book, but one that can be enjoyed by anyone who has an interst in potting, with a history of pots and throwing. I also really enjoyed the section showing other potters at work. Again, the pictures were clear, and the text informative. All in all, an excellent book.

While browsing through the ceramics section in Loughborough University library I came across this book and borrowed it (I am doing an MA in ceramics and thought it would be helpful for a project I was doing about jugs). It was so good that I decided to buy a copy. It is more than just a guide to throwing placing an emphasis on critical and creative thought. The author is an extremely accomplished thrower and the book is well illustrated with his work as well as many of the acknowledged masters of this craft. As far as jugs is concerned there are several execellent examples where the union between body/rim and handle is fabulous.
The icing on the cake came at Earth & Fire (Rufford)2010 where my work was on show. I heard that Alex McErlain would be there on the Saturday so I took my book along and he signed it!
