Product Description

Product Description

This illuminating work outlines the essential principles and techniques that define the art of striking in most martial arts. More than 1,400 outstanding photographs introduce over 400 practical techniques encompassing all types of strikes: hand strikes, elbow strikes, standing kicks, aerial kicks, ground kicks, head and body strikes, advanced combinations, avoiding and blocking skills, defenses against punches and kicks, and pressure point attacks. Comprehensive introductory chapters provide an authoritative overview of important technical principles, East Asian energetic concepts, and 109 fundamental skills encompassing hitting surfaces, stances, footwork, and common methods of falling. Precise anatomical illustrations and descriptions of 106 common Oriental pressure points, and a visual comparison of different martial arts, make this an invaluable resource for all martial styles.

Expertly written and designed by the author of the 1,136-page Hapkido—widely acclaimed the most comprehensive book ever written on a single martial art—this exceptional work is designed to stand alone, or function as a companion text with the author's other works on martial techniques and anatomy. Regardless of the style you practice, these books will enrich your training, improve your technique, and deepen your understanding of the unique qualities embodied in your own martial art.

Better than expected... 12 Dec 2004

I took into account the previous review before I bought this book, but I enjoyed the other books in the series, so I thought I would give it a fair chance.

I always appreciate when someone takes the time to write a review & share their opinion, but the previous review leaves me a bit confused.

I just don't see what the big gripe was about this book.

I am an accomplished martial artist & I enjoy learning from any source that deepens my understanding of this wonderful art.

To me, this book, like the others by this author, offers a wealth of knowledge.

This book is a nice addition to my martial arts library.

D. Dedet 8 July 2007

Having been involved with Martial Arts for over 20 yrs. I think this book provides a great deal of information that is essential to martial artists of all levels and systems. The fundementals of striking are very well explained and illustrated. This book clearly explains all aspects of striking. No book will make any of us a fast and powerfull striker. Only with a solid understanding and lots of practice can we hope to accomplish that!

Just a list 8 Sep 2005
By Pat R. Ogrady - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If your looking for a list of all the different martial strikes, then this is a good book for you. For example, if you don't know what a straight (jab) punch or a reverse (cross) is then I guess you can learn it and many other techniques.

However, if you'd like to learn HOW to strike hard/fast/better than don't bother. Nothing on heavy bag punching. Nothing on strengthening/conditioning your body to allow it to strike more efficiently... just a list of strikes!

Having lived in Korea for over 3 years I can safely say that it's a very Korean thing to do. Make a long list of all the different things your capable of. In the end, one is left with the question "so what"?
