I am new to fado even though it is part of my heritage, so I am purchasing 'sight unseen' a variety of different fado compilations of which this is one.
I am enjoying it especially as it is a mixture of guitar solo and guitar and vocalist.

Was not quite what I was after, but is very nice background listening anyway, so happy to have it in the collection.

New classics of Fado 3 Mar. 2011
By Dean Frey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Custodio Castelo is a master of the guitarra portuguesa, a really cool instrument that looks like a mandolin and has odd tuning and sympathetic strings, like a baryton or sitar. It's an important part of the traditional accompaniment for the genre of music known as fado, which comes from 19th century Portugal and which remains very popular around the world today.

Any type of music becomes of only antiquarian interest unless there are great interpreters to breathe life into old works, and great composers to re-invent the form. Castelo plays both roles, and the evidence is here in this new CD from ARC music. Castelo's Ausente ("Absent", the second track on the disc) seems destined to be a fado classic. It's reminiscent of Gente da Minha Terra, the song written by the great Amália Rodrigues and popularized by Mariza. This song typifies "saudade", the nostalgic feeling of loss and sadness so often connected with fado, and with many other forms of music throughout the Portuguese-speaking world.

The album includes less mournful moods as well, though. Quase morna ("Almost warm") is a sprightly dance, while Homage a Paredes shows Castelo is a virtuoso in the same league as the guitarist Carlos Paredes, the famous "man with a thousand fingers". This disc is very highly recommended to fans of world music and great guitar-playing.

Romance and Brilliance: Contemporary Fado 4 Feb. 2011
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Portuguese fado, like Argentine tango and Greek rembetika, has a melancholy heart, a feeling of longing, and a bittersweet take on life. The key instrument that accompanies the vocalists of this art is a peculiar guitar, of six double strings, long neck, and pear-shaped sounding board with rounded back. Further uniqueness is that its three treble string pairs are tuned to the same note! Moreover, the bass sets are tuned in octaves. The sound is somewhat akin to a bouzouki. This album is mainly of instrumentals by a brilliant master and composer of this odd Portuguese guitar, Custodio Castelo. He is supported by musicians playing bass and acoustic classical guitars and at times accordion. This 60-minute, 17-track album is beautiful. Castelo's compositions and agile performance are sad, sweet, jazzy, warm, clever, romantic, and fun. This music is contemporary throughout however rooted to the spirit of the tradition. Tempus, the original title of this album, is this artist's milestone, recorded after serious, potentially debilitating shoulder surgery. The energy and gravitas and excitement are felt. If you are unfamiliar with the Portuguese guitar and fado, this album will be a pleasing surprise.

For me a great discovery 12 May 2013

Once in a while I discover an artist new to me who excites me with their power and mastery. But seldom do I have the opportunity to discover an entire genre. Watching Palladia one night, I heard Mariza performing a fado song, "Promete, jura." I was captivated by not only her singing but also the accompaniment of the Portuguese guitar.

Now I'm learning a little bit about fado. And nothing could help me develop my appreciation more than this album, which gives me in this showcase many of the masters of the fado guitar. Every song shows a different aspect of expression and the flexibility of the tradition.

I especially like the last two songs--"Mumurios do silencio" and "Fado monte." The first is a haunting, echoing piece. The second skillfully works together different tempos. I don't believe either could be performed on an instrument other than the Portuguese guitar nor could they be played so well as by these masters of the fado guitar.
