The Art of Todd McFarlane is a visual autobiography of the comic artist, master himself. It's quite a book to behold.

It's a seriously inspiring book. You'll learn about the effort he put into drawing from his schooling days, to the getting his first job and then creating companies like Image Comics and McFarlane Toys. Besides that he has also included the many side projects he's involved in, such as creating music videos, concepts for animation and movie, video games and more.

This guy sent out 700 submission letters to comic editors and received hundreds of rejection letters, and collected all the critiques to improve himself. And he actually counted the number of submissions sent?! That's determination, and the quality of his work shows. This guy is the accumulation of talent plus hard work.

The artworks showcased are amazing. Very well reproduced, printed big. You'll see his early works, in pencils, ink and colours. The accompanying commentary provides insightful background to the work, and his career progression. He has worked for Marvel, DC Comics, so those works are included as well, as his many Spawn comic art. You'll read a lot about what goes on behind creating comic art.

This book is available in hardcover and paperback. At 400 pages thick, I'll recommend getting the hardcover but I've yet to see the binding on the paperback. The paperback is much better and may be a better bargain for the price though.

Highly recommended.

Love Todd's art from yesteryear? Get this. I did get mine with a corner dinged from amazon's handling BUT it did not detract from the interiors. This is a big book and cannot be missed by fans of McFarlane.

An Amazing Insight into One of Comic's Greatest Creators 3 Jan. 2013
By Nolan P. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Todd McFarlane is an icon in the comic industry. From his groundbreaking work at Marvel Comics, which included the first appearance of the memorable Spider-Man villain, Venom, to his creator owned work as one of the founders of Image Comics, McFarlane is a visionary in the world of sequential art. Yet, it didn't stop there, as McFarlane has went on to found McFarlane Toys, which produces figures based on the NFL, NBA, MLB and more, and has worked with various musical acts on cover art and video concepts. Image Comics has rolled out The Art of Todd McFarlane, which showcases McFarlane's artwork, from the very beginning to the here and now.

Even though this is produced through Image Comics, the art encompasses Marvel Comics, DC Comics, even Epic Comics and more. The book has a very slick look to it all, making it the perfect way to showcase McFarlane's timeline of art. This book shows it all: from his early works as a youth just dreaming of becoming an artist, we see the evolution of a man who would become a staple in the industry. You might be surprised on some of the work this man has done during his time in the industry.

This is an amazing insight into McFarlane's creative mind, much more than your average art book. Being a huge fan of McFarlane's, I thought I knew all the books he had been a part of: man, was I wrong. McFarlane not only worked at Marvel, but did quite a few books over at DC Comics as well. We see all his works, which shows his growth as an artist throughout the years. We even see a rare glimpse at the bad side of being an artist: the denial letters. I would have never imagined that someone of McFarlane's talent would ever be turned down, but he shows the actual envelopes and letters of just a few of his rejection letters.

Besides comic books, we see his work on the album covers for Disturbed and Korn, as well as a look into the toy empire he built off of his success. With a foreword by the legend of the comic industry, Stan Lee, this is something special indeed. I cannot recommend this book enough as it shines as an example of what an art book should be like. McFarlane trail blazed a path through the comic industry, one that opened the door to so many of the talent we see these days. This book is an amazing representation of the body of work McFarlane has amassed throughout the years, and will leave any comic fan in awe. Highly Recommended!!!

Beyond Awesome! 4 Dec. 2012

I am a casual comic book reader and fan, but whatever level of geek in me began with Todd Mcfarlane and Spawn. When most remember parts of their life with songs, I remember my senior year based on Spawn issues. "The Art of Todd McFarlane is not just cool, it is a beautiful book. For artists/writers, like myself, looking for inspiration, this is a must have. Every colorful image pops out from the pages. As someone who discovered him right before he became a household name beyond the comic book world, it is great to read of his beginning.

Great book, great story, amazing art...absolutely a beautiful book!
Excellent art book 15 Jan. 2014

Not everyone is a fan of Todd McFarlane. For those of us who do enjoy (or enjoyed) his work however, this is an excellent book chronicling the evolution of his art in the medium of comic books. My favorite aspect of this book was that McFarlane dug way back into his artistic archive - as far back as high school - and gave us fans a glimpse into some of his earliest work. This coupled with lots of sketches, original art and printed artwork from his professional career makes for a well rounded and relatively complete viewing experience.

The book also sprinkles in a written overview of McFarlanes journey from amateur artist, to superstar comic creator, to successful business man throughout the art. Though not as in-depth as it could have been, I feel that this narrative provides a nice frame of reference for the art without becoming too wordy or biographical.

The book itself is printed beautifully on high quality, glossy paper and is a solid 400 pages in length. This is actually bigger than my Alex Ross Mythology art book which is also a very good read.

Nobody who is involved in comics (either in the business or a fan) can deny that Todd McFarlane helped pump life in the comic business and helped pave the way for some of our favorite artists in the business to highlight their talents. He also took his talent to another level when he got into the action figure business. He gave all of us fans what we wanted when we dreamt of what action figures should be and how they should look. Todd McFarlane is definitely the total package and this book highlights all of it.
