This CD is really the highlights from the 34 CD Vanguard set of Deller's singing career, consisting of (10 CD's of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque vocal music, 6 CDs of Purcell, 3 CDs of Italian Madrigals, 4 CDs of Christmas Music, 6 CDs of Folksongs, etc). It condenses the vocal magnificence of Deller's singing over a very wide range of repertoire into 1 CD (no easy feat). It contains traditional English songs like "The Three Ravens", "King Henry" and the superbly sung "The Cuckoo", as well as English Madrigals from Byrd "Come Pretty Babe" and others, and the splendid and unknown "Pandopho" by Robert Parsons (d.1570) (composer for the Chapel Royal), the ravishing birthday Ode to Queen Anne "O Light Divine", pieces by Lassus, Monteverdi, DesPrez (The Deploration of Ockeghem) with the Deller Consort (magnificient), as well as extensive excerpts from Purcell's songs and incidental music. The Deller Consort which appears with several different pieces here creates a truly ensemble and majestic musical atmosphere surrounding Deller's floating and timeless vocal quality. Clear remastered sound. No text librettos are included. A bargain considering the quality of the singing and the recorded sound. Since the 4 CD Harmonia Mundi "Deller the Legacy" is out-of-print, and cost over 10 times the cost of this CD when it was available, this is definitely a great second choice. Alfred Deller - Portrait d'une voix (Portrait of a Voice) [with bonus CD] [1975] [DVD] [NTSC]Alfred Deller - Portrait of a Legend

The Art of Alfred Deller: The Counter-Tenor Legacy
This is a wonderful collection of counter-tenor singing from Deller & his group. The range is wide, and expressly sung by Deller et al, the interest in the technique being maintained for the whole album.
Deller is easily one of the greatest exponents of the form, clear and delicate, expressive when needed never forced or shrill.
Beautifully recorded, excellent album for anyone interested in the history of counter-tenor singing which is having a rennaisance at the moment.

Alfred Deller is claimed to have revived the art of the solo counter-tenor. Some would say that there are now too many counter-tenors, not all of whom are a pleasure to listen to. In this collection, the recordings Alfred Deller made in the '50s are superb and a model for all aspirant counter-tenors, those in the '60s a little less so and those with his son best ignored. Overall though the CD is essential listening for anyone who loves good singing.
