Product Description

Product Description

In a long-ago war, humankind set off a devastating ecological disaster. Thriving industrial societies disappeared. The earth is slowly submerging beneath the expanding Sea of Corruption, an enormous toxic forest that creates mutant insects and releases a miasma of poisonous spores into the air. At the edge of the sea, tiny kingdoms are scattered on tiny parcels of land. Here lies the Valley of the Wind, a kingdom of barely 500 citizens, a nation given fragile protection from the decaying sea's poisons by the ocean breezes, and home to Nausicaa.

About the Author

Hayao Miyazaki is the prominent director of many popular animated feature films. He is also the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, the award-winning Japanese animation studio and production company behind worldwide hits such as PRINCESS MONONOKE, HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE and SPIRITED AWAY.

Beautiful impressions 15 April 2010

Here's the other art book for Nausicaa, the other being The Art of Nausicaa, which is in Japanese (ISBN 4198145601). This one collects all the art created using watercolour for both the manga and film.

About half of the book is on the manga. There aren't any comic panels but you'll see a lot of covers, such as those he did for Animage, a Japanese anime and entertainment magazine. The covers are printed huge, often fullpage. Very beautiful and feels very different from the mainstream manga with the use of watercolour. If you remove the dust jacket, you'll see some of the Animage covers that have been published.

For the film section, there are storyboards, background concept art and character designs. Since I've the other art book as well, I see a bit of duplication of drawings, but printed in different sizes.

There's plenty of accompanying commentary for the art. He talks about everything from his thoughts on drawing covers, which he dislikes, and drawing Nausicaa (character) out of character, which he dislike even more. You'll find a lot of interesting stuff regarding clashes with his artistic vision for the manga and film at that time. At the back is a longer piece of interview which looks at how the idea of making Nausicaa came about.

All the drawings that appear in this book are drawn by Miyazaki, dating way back to 1982. It's amazing to see how far Miyazaki has come.

Nausicaa and Miyazaki fans will find this book to be a nice collectible.

If you are a fan of Nausicaä you will LOVE this book. Throughout all the artwork runs a translated commentary by Miyazaki himself (there is also a 7 page interview) which is very illuminating. The book is designed to show you the process of creation for Nausicaä starting with the Manga and then the Animated feature film, it is also worth noting most of the pages are full colour (there are plenty of b/w sketches but they are in the minority).

Pages 5 to 97 contain lots of completed covers, sketches, promotional posters and a few detailed maps for the Manga.

97 to 145 contain concept sketches, image-boards and paintings for the Animated Film.

145 to 176 contain motifs that inspired Nausicaä showing the evolution of ideas with early sketches and paintings.

176 to 208 contain a bonus sketch book with 190 extra concept sketches, an interesting time-line matching Animage issues to the collected editions and four autobiographical cartoons that were published in Animage apologizing to fans for long breaks in the serialization!.

I think this is the definitive Nausicaä companion book. I have seen the other `Art of Nausicaä' paperback and it is very good, but in my opinion there are too many cell animation stills and not enough paintings and sketches etc. For my money, the Watercolor version is far superior in the amount of original artwork reproduction and scope- the personal commentary by Miyazaki that runs throughout the entire book adds that extra special content that the earlier artbook lacks.

The Art of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind: Watercolor Impressions is a beautiful hard-back that is very well produced and offers a fascinating look into the mind of one of Japan's best loved creators.

A must for english speaking Studio Ghibli fans everywhere! A+

I really love Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and this book is perfect for anyone who loves it too. It shows lots of watercolour paintings Hayao Miyazaki has painted and also features his comments on them and what they were used for. Also included are many sketches he drew when designing the film and seeing Nausicaa develop is very interesting. Contains maps, diagrams and sketches for the film too.
Super!
