Book Description

11 July 2009 1903254574 978-1903254578 2nd
The most comprehensive collection of video nasty and pre-certificate video sleeves ever reproduced in one volume. The Art of the Nasty explains and conveys the media furore, the fear and the rush for political legislation that greeted the arrival of uncensored horror films on video in the UK. The hysteria was generated and fuelled as much by the sleeves and marketing as by the films themselves. In fact, many of the biggest critics of the 'nasties' only ever saw the sleeves. Some of the early video sleeves are indeed an unbelievably bold and over-the-top mixture of outrageous graphics and in-your-face visual shock tactics, guaranteed to offend. Banned by an Act of Parliament after a frenzied and hysterical press campaign, the video nasty was deemed at the time to be a threat to society as we know it, even being implicated by career politicians and journalists as a catalyst for murder. The Art of the Nasty reproduces 450 pre-certificate video covers in all their lurid glory, from the ludicrous and extreme imagery of SS Experiment Camp and the gross savagery of Cannibal Holocaust to the powerful, confrontational image of a rape victim used to promote I Spit on Your Grave. Covering the whole gamut of pre-certificate video sleeves, from the 'Official' 39 nasties which were found obscene by the Director of Public Prosecutions through to jaw-dropping sleaze epics like Killer Nun and Violation of the Bitch, The Art of the Nasty is an invaluable visual record of a time the mainstream video industry would like to forget. 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the Video Recordings Act - the legislation passed by Parliament in order to 'crack down' on the sale of video nasties. This fact precipitated the decision by FAB Press to re-issue The Art of the Nasty at this time. Ironically, in June 2009 the BBFC passed the controversial film Antichrist uncut. There is no doubt that, had the film been released in 1984, it would have been banned outright, demonstrating yet again the way in which moral fashions shift with time. As well as reproducing the key art of the video nasty covers in full colour, and with comprehensive text describing the films and the subsequent censorship history of each title, the book puts the nasties into the political and social context of the 1980s, demonstrating how much the censorship landscape of Great Britain has changed over the course of 25 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars the welcome return of the Nasty! 12 Sep 2009
This new updated edition of The Art of the Nasty starts with a foreword written by Nigel Wingrove in July 2009: the original intro from 1998 is also included. It's really interesting to read how the UK Censors have mellowed & because of less draconian rules many of these old films which were once banned can now be found without the fear of having one's collar felt by the `Bill' for possessing a forbidden video! The photos of all those old gems are beautifully laid out together with brief synopses & the authors don't eulogise everything - if a film was a bit rubbish they tell you! Very nostalgic to look back at long forgotten video companies with names such as Hikon, Go, Sapphire & Jaguar - wonder where those guys are now?!
Printed in solid hardback & published under license through good old Fab Press this is a book that no self respecting collector of `unusual' (!) movies should be without!

A stunning informative beautiful bloody history lesson.
If you grew up in a video store during the eighties ( I was lucky enough to work in one during my teenage years ) this is a sublime book.
The artwork of the old video nasty covers is a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars FAB!!! 20 Jun 2012

A sensational coffee table book, featuring artwork from all 39 video nasties that were banned in 1984. The wonderful, lurid covers are shown in all their glory to admire and enjoy. It works well as both a history book and an art book. We get a small news section in the corner of every page to show us what was also going on in the political world at the time, as well as other interesting facts. Not only do we get the banned film art, but also a large selection of pre cert video covers of films that were confiscated by police and the charges were later dropped. If you love horror movie artwork then this is the crown jewels of these books and I hightly recommend it!

As a fan of pre-cert videos, and video nasties in particular, its great to see so many books and documentaries appear about the phenomenon. This book is one of the best, and acts as a useful way of seeing the covers of videos I probably won't ever be lucky enough to track down, or have the money to own (because I am poor.) Beyond being a collection of video sleeves, this book evokes that whole video nasties era, and for me personally brings back many happy memories of childhood, when as a little girl my grandfather would take me to the local market where a video stall holder would rent him under the counter copies of "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Faces of Death" for me to watch. Reading the coverage of those two videos in this book did make me a little misty eyed, as I know my grandfather would have loved this book, given that he was such a fan of pre-cert videos, to the degree that we even buried his ashes in the VTC Video case of `Zombie Holocaust' because he always wanted to be buried in something large and gold.

Thankfully the emphasis in this book is on proper badass horror and exploitation films, with no wimpy, mainstream rubbish like The Time Bandits (which did have a pre-cert video release, but I still hate) getting a look in, instead we get coverage of true, meaty films like `City of the Living Dead', in which a priest makes people vomit their entrails up and features zombies who are so annoyed at being dead that they can't even be bothered to eat people (like what they usually do) and instead just pull the backs of people's heads off.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the pre cert collector. 7 Jan 2010
This review is for the later reprint released in 2009. Written by my mate Marc Morris with Nigel Wingrove, it is the definitive book about the UK pre-certification era and is a must for a series tape collector such as myself.
Hopefully this version has addressed the binding issue of the first edition.
There are various sections including The Nasties and Nice and Sleazy plus good up to date write ups and reviews.
An essential purchase.

Quite honestly a great book filled with images and a synopsis for so many Video Nasty classics however Amazon failed to pack my order correctly so the spine and the corners of the book are banged up. Having contacted them to make a compliant and leave packaging feedback, I never received a response to either. Really disappointed with Amazon on this one, possibly will never order a book through them again :(
