Review

"'Enlightening and impressively reasonable... A painless and jargon-free introduction to the psychology of Buddhism, probably the most intelligent thing this benighted planet has come up with.' Sunday Times 'A wonderful book - easy to read and full of anecdotal advice geared to the general reader rather than the philosopher or follower of any particular spiritual tradition.' Yoga and Health"

Product Description

A number one bestseller in France, this is an elegant and inspiring short guide to the art of meditation: another instant classic from the bestselling author of Happiness. Wherever he goes, Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard is asked to explain what meditation is, how it is done and what it can achieve. In this elegant, authoritative and entirely accessible book, he sets out to answer these questions. Although meditation is a life-long process even for the wisest, "The Art of Meditation" demonstrates that by practicing it on a daily basis we can change our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In this brilliant short book, Matthieu Ricard talks us through the theory, spirituality and practical aspects of meditation. He illustrates each stage of his teaching with examples and pictures, leading the reader deeper into their own practice. Through his experience as a monk, his close reading of sacred texts and his deep knowledge of the Buddhist masters, Matthieu Ricard shows the significant benefits that meditation, based on selfless love and compassion, can bring to each of us.

wonderful guide 1 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a very concise, sensible and powerful guide to the ancient practice of meditation. I read Matthieu Ricard's earlier book on happiness, and was impressed by its dogma-free, humanistic perspective, and this book follows the same pattern. Although the principles of Buddhism are in the background, meditation is discussed as a practice in its own right, with all its amazing benefits on physical, psychological and spiritual levels. I've tried meditation irregularly in the past but now I'm determined to practise it on a regular basis, for all its wonderful effects to unfold. The Art of Meditation is a great companion read to another wonderful new book, Steve Taylor's Waking From Sleep, which looks into meditation and a whole range of consciousness-changing activities, and investigates how they transform us. Waking from Sleep: Why Awakening Experiences Occur and How to Make Them Permanent

Excellent book 9 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover
As a long time meditator I bough this book because I heard it reviewed on the radio and like Ricard's clear style of writing. I was not disappointed, in fact I bought two more copies to give away. It is one of the most useful books I have come across to give to non-Buddhist friends who are a bit interested but also a bit , or a lot, sceptical about meditation.

Although this is one of the more positive books on meditation I've read, and Matthieu Ricard always writes positively and lucidly, this book does not have as many "how to" instructions as I would have hoped. It is almost just a shortened version of his book on happiness, with a few ideas for meditation thrown in for good measure.
There is food for thought here, but for someone trying to begin meditation by themselves it is a bit sparse.

Quite a difficult read - not all that practical
I've struggled with this book and not found it particularly easy to read - the author seems to go off on tangents quite a lot. Read more
