Book Description

With the Haurstaf decimated, the Unmer have seized the palace at Awl. The Unmer Prince Paulus Marquetta discovers an ally in the blind girl Ianthe, albeit a dangerous one. She has the power to destroy his mind with a single thought. But Ianthe's friendship with the Unmer has made her dangerous enemies. The exiled Unmer lord, Argusto Conquillas is determined to challenge the prince and his followers – and kill anyone who gets in his way. When the disgraced Gravedigger soldier Granger learns of his daughter’s danger, he must use every scrap of his cunning to protect her. Even that may not be enough as the Unmer, in their quest to unlock the secrets of the universe, have made a bargain with a god . . . a deal that threatens to destroy the world. Scott Lynch has praised Campbell's work, saying he 'mingles action and atmosphere with the grace of a seasoned pro. Trudi Canavan has also called Campbell's work 'visually rich' and the Daily Telegraph compared him to China Miéville. Praise for Book One, Sea of Ghosts: ‘His invented world is one of the most bizarre, fascinating and dangerous it has been my pleasure to encounter . . . the story grips like a vice, filled with mystery and action’ The Times

Review

Praise for Sea of Ghosts, book one of the Gravedigger Chronicles: ‘His invented world is one of the most bizarre, fascinating and dangerous it has been my pleasure to encounter . . . the story grips like a vice, filled with mystery and action, and there is a rich vein of black humour running through the strangeness’ The Times, 'Endlessly imaginative and impressively ambitious, but it's also a hugely fun adventure story that keeps up a relentless pace, leaving you with a cliff-hanger ending that will have you gasping for the next book in double-quick time’ Sci-Fi-London.com, ‘Sea of Ghosts is wonderful meaty stuff from Mr Campbell again – he’s a true original . . . engages you from page one and never lets go’ Neal Asher, ‘Rampant imagination is allied with unusually rich writing.’ Morning Star, ‘Sea of Ghosts is a highly entertaining novel highlighted by cinematic pacing, exhilarating action sequences, and unexpected moments of dark violence’ Fantasy Book Critic blog, ‘A fantasy that in both its conception and execution is vivid, bloody, enthralling and utterly atmospheric, the first of what should be a fantastic new series. Bravo’ BookGeeks.co.uk

THE GRAVEDIGGER CHRONICLES

Ianthe sought refuge with the Haurstaf, a sisterhood of powerful telepaths. But instead of finding sanctuary, she found betrayal, danger and pain.

Now the sorcerous Unmer have broken the sisterhood, seizing their palace at Awl. And their prince finds an ally in the blind Ianthe - though he knows the girl could destroy his mind with a single thought. Ianthe's friendship with the prince has made her powerful enemies too, ones she may not survive.

When Granger learns of his daughter Ianthe's danger, he's desperate to protect her. Yet even his resources as an ex-Gravedigger soldier may not be enough. In their quest to unlock the secrets of the universe, the Unmer have made a bargain with a god - a deal which could just destroy their world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Second Book 21 Nov 2013
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
The second book in the Gravedigger Chronicles (with the first being Sea of Ghosts) and to be honest I wasn't quite sure what I was going to get as its been a while since I read the original. What happens within is a story that continues to expand the world created in the original with cracking characters and some wonderful twists that will keep you glued from one page to another.

Add to this some great prose that works wonderfully alongside some wonderful turns of phrase all round made this a book that I had a hard time putting down. Thank you Alan for a wonderful read and I know who to blame for a sleepless night now. LOL

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely in Awe 22 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just spent the most wonderful week dipping my toes in and out of the Brine. Only wish I had a Replicating Sword so I could submit multiple 5 star reviews. I've loved all Alan Campbell's books so far. For imagination, prose, and sheer originality he far outstrips most writers on the planet... and any other horror laden multiverse hanging around waiting to be exploited by a fantasy author.

After such a long wait i was worrying that this'll be a shoddy affair. Good to know that it's one of, if not the finest books he's written. Can't recommend it high enough.

Bad I know but I bought this and Alan's first book based on the catchy artwork, however I was even more impressed by the excellent written work within. Immerse yourself in this unique fantasy world unlike any of the other worlds created by other such writers. Strong bold exciting writing, I just need him to get the next episode on the shelves....soon!

If you have read the books I can recommend a visit to his web site where he provides a link to an art students portfolio based on the books characters....stunning work.
