Whether you are someone who shoots regularly, or just someone with an interest in the workings of shotguns and everything that goes with owning a gun, this is the book to buy. Much of the work of the gunsmith is never really seen by the owner as it is the internal components of the gun that are usually adjusted or replaced. However, anyone with any interest at all in their shotgun will either know or want to know how to strip their gun, both for cleaning maintenance and also if they have a minor malfunction while out shooting.

This volume goes into full detail about the gunsmith's art. Who has not admired the beautiful finish on many of the shotgun's in your local gun shop, even if they are far out of your price range. The barrel[s] finish, be it a blacked, blued or brown finish and on some of the top notch weapons, the beautiful engraving and tooling of both the metal and the stock. How these and other things are achieved is covered in the book. The different types of gun are also covered in some detail. Side by side barrels, over and under, the different types of ejector mechanism etc.

Also very importantly the book goes into detail about gun proofing and the law. All in all the book covers virtually everything that you need or would like to know. It shows both the complexity of the shotgun and the skill of the gunsmith.

Very detailed and helpful but not really for the aspiring amateur gunsmith. Unless you have a well equipped workshop and a fair degree of metal work knowledge to go with it, this book is not for you.
However it is excellent when it comes to explaining the intricasies of some of the hidden workings within your shotgun. It will also convince some of you who may think you have the skills to think again before you start tinkering with your gun.Unless you know you can do your own repairs leave to the expert - because if you get it wrong, the consequences could be both devastating and final!

What a wonderful read. Clearly the work of a craftsman in his own right. Practical and wide ranging. I recommend this book to everyone who has an interest the maintenance and/or repair of shotguns, whether of the metalwork or the woodwork. A really useful book to own and to re-read.

Now this is a good book if you have nothing to do with the trade but some interest in how the noise-maker is working. Very informative (and not only in the <<hardware>> region) but you do have to know wich end is the dangerous one on a shotgun - to get your bearings right. Don't expect it to be a <<user manual>> or <<exploded view>> for every make and brand. Just the really important information PLUS A LOT of tips and tricks of the trade known to just a few. Big little secrets revealed.
A great read, a great bedside book, but I can prefigure an oily layer on it's cover and some ugly looking stains on the interior pages as it sits right next to my gun-vise...
