By A. White VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The Synopsis states;

"Whether you are a designer looking for tips, an artist seeking inspiration, or a passionate games enthusiast, you will find everything you need to know" and I would totally agree with it. Falling into the game enthusiast role myself with also a interest in art and how things are created I found this book a enjoyable read.

People already familar with the games industry and have pervouis experince in design may have heard some of it before yet with interviews thoughout the book from different companies different views are presented meaning you have room to think of your own view on something rather then "this is how it should be done" being forced on you.

Most of the book is taken up with full-colour screenshots, concept art and other work from games themselves yet all are explained and stated where they are from, this means that full detail isn't gone into on subjects yet I feel it is enough not the baffle people and get them bored while still providing a good insight.

Many game characters are explained (some I didn't know yet it was still interesting) from different genres of games and explains why they look like they do, how costume is important, there design process and many other things.

This book in my option is for people with a casual interest or students wanting something interesting to read on the subject of games design. It offers no tuturiols or "how to make" guides yet every so often does state certain well known game engines and programs like photoshop.

A Guided Tour Through Video Game History 16 Aug 2006
By GameMaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a really interesting book. It gives you a guided tour through video game history by looking at and discussing the art of many historic games. The book has lots and lots of color pictures from popular video games, and offers running commentary on their importantance. Also there are several brief interviews with artists that worked on some of these projects. They share some of their philosophies of character development. There is also some brief discussion about character development workflow.

This book isn't so much instructional as it is inspirational. I don't think you can read (or skim) through this book without getting some new, fresh, ideas of characters for your own game.
Pretty Good Book 17 Sep 2011

It has a lot of good pictures of characters, but it never goes into the depth i wanted for the characters themselves, or on the Art of MAKING Game characters. But its still a good reference.
GREAT FOR ARTISTS OR THOSE INTERESTED IN GAME DESIGN 26 Aug 2008
By S. Colazo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I believe this book is great. It provides a good insight into how characters are made with personility and background. The chapters are fun, diving into the different types of characterd (hulking men, femme fatales, dark villians, ect.) and each chapter usually includes an interview from designers working in the industry. Although some might complain that the book lacks real technical information (it does), there are some great pointers and "concept sketches-to-life" pics. It's hard not to be inspired, the book gives you great ideas. Overall, the book is very good and i would highly recommend it.
