Product Description

Review

An unexpectedly entertaining book about the art of training and shaping trees and shrubs to add form and drama to the garden. What could have been quite a dull and repetitive subject is given pace and light by Jake Hobson's engaging prose and his expert knowledge of the subject [...] This book is a mixture of the inspirational and the practical, with at times jaw-dropping examples of just how far the art of topiary can go... it is clear that the only limit to what can be achieved is the imagination of the person wielding the clippers. --Gardens Illustrated, Stephanie Donaldson

...full of pictures of greenery that is quite arresting, sometimes hilarious and odd, but always evocative and likely to draw opinion... This book is fascinating, something different, and very interesting. --The English Garden, Stephanie Mahon

The Art of Creative Pruning is full of fab photos and detailed instructions on how to tackle all sorts of severe horticultural reshaping. --The Independent, Emma Townshend

Product Description

In this book, author Jake Hobson outlines an approach that is more creative than traditional topiary and positively encourages out-of-the-box thinking. Instead of peacocks and rabbits you will see boxwood shaped to reveal a row of Russian dolls and hedges carved with graffiti. Innovatively photographed works in formal gardens around the world are presented here alongside well illustrated step-by-step projects, encouraging you immediately to pick up some pruners and begin to experiment with this creative, therapeutic form of garden art.

This book was recommended to me and has proved to be just the job. Well written and covering many types of trained trees and topiary shrubs, it was just what I was looking for to research pleached hedges and other kinds of ornamental pruning. If you are interested in Japanese training, this book will be invaluable.

Ugly Is Not An Option 11 Mar 2012
By Miss Nan Dina - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If plants are not maintained they have two possible outcomes. Ugly or dead. For plants, dead is better.
Then perhapsy you'll drag it out of the yard rather than let it slowly rot away, offending
the neighbors.
Hedges hold a top place on the ugly list. Most--really, MOST-- should be whacked down to the ground
and religiously and carefully pruned to full and enticing shape for years. Years!
And then it isn't ugly. It's boring.
But it doesn't have to be.
Change can happen.
Beauty, or whimsy, or majesty are all yours for the making. Clip a collection of scowling thugs.
Write your name in a living green wall. Create lines that sinuously curve across the earth as
though they were, well, alive. The photos show what you could do, the writer tells you how
to do it. The many pictures are beautiful, the writer can write. Prepare to be inspired. And
consumed. And activated as though someone pushed your ON button.
I love this book.
