Book Description

Nothing brings a touch of artistry to the garden like ornamental pruning, and a series of deliberate cuts can create landscapes and evoke faraway places. All that's needed to recreate the effect in the garden are a sharp pair of pruners, some imagination, and the instruction found in The Art of Creative Pruning. Drawing on both eastern and western styles, author Jake Hobson moves beyond the traditional lollipops and animals and teaches a wholly new approach to ornamental pruning that appeals to modern sensibilities.

Picture boxwoods trimmed into whimsical Russian nesting dolls, hedges inscribed with words, and a tree snipped to resemble the toppling tiers of a wedding cake. These are just a few of the unusual ideas featured in the beautifully photographed pages. All the practical considerations are here as well, including pruning to improve a view, remedial pruning to fix problems, and pruning fruit trees to increase yield.

Review

An unexpectedly entertaining book about the art of training and shaping trees and shrubs to add form and drama to the garden. What could have been quite a dull and repetitive subject is given pace and light by Jake Hobson's engaging prose and his expert knowledge of the subject [...] This book is a mixture of the inspirational and the practical, with at times jaw-dropping examples of just how far the art of topiary can go... it is clear that the only limit to what can be achieved is the imagination of the person wielding the clippers. --Gardens Illustrated, Stephanie Donaldson

...full of pictures of greenery that is quite arresting, sometimes hilarious and odd, but always evocative and likely to draw opinion... This book is fascinating, something different, and very interesting. --The English Garden, Stephanie Mahon

The Art of Creative Pruning is full of fab photos and detailed instructions on how to tackle all sorts of severe horticultural reshaping. --The Independent, Emma Townshend

Like a postmodernist manifesto, this joyous book offers a fresh and lively perspective on an ancient craft that might have become tired and stereotypical. --The Garden (October Issue), Andi Clevely

The Art of Creative Pruning is full of fab photos and detailed instructions on how to tackle all sorts of severe horticultural reshaping. --The Independent, Emma Townshend

About the Author

Jake Hobson worked in a traditional Japanese nursery in the outskirts of Osaka, Japan, after completing a degree in Sculpture at London's Slade School of Fine Arts. A keen observer of the artistry of gardens, Jake now runs his own pruning equipment and consultancy business, and experiments with mixing pruning styles from the East and the West. A love of sculpture and nature makes him particularly interested in how we relate to certain landscapes and elements of nature, and how the combination of horticulture, sculpture and nature can be expressed in gardens.

This book was recommended to me and has proved to be just the job. Well written and covering many types of trained trees and topiary shrubs, it was just what I was looking for to research pleached hedges and other kinds of ornamental pruning. If you are interested in Japanese training, this book will be invaluable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and informative 5 Aug. 2013

This book shows a great variety of pruned/clipped/shaped hedges/shrubs and more. Some amusing, some amazing, some thought provoking and all well presented. The emphasis is on ideas from around the world not technical pruning skills.

3.0 out of 5 stars MMMmmmmmmm..... 8 Sept. 2014

An interesting book, although there seem to be more stories on what the author has done rather than how we can do it. Maybe should have gone for a 'step by step' book. One of the most expensive books in this category.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful ideas for serious gardeners 24 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
In addition to many creative ideas for traditional topiary this excellent book introduces us to the Japanese arts of pruning pine trees to control their size in an attractive way. The shapes and techniques illustrated in the book should be of great help to all gardeners wishing to contain and display trees & shrubs in a pleasing and stimulating way. Tony J Carey
