The Eyes, like The Creation & The Fleur-De-Lys, were part of the Brit Freakbeat(as of today) or Psychedelic(as of then) 60's scene. At least they got to make an LP, but never had a hit, and you're about to discover why.
They were a constantly useful live band-a little coreographed, perhaps, but not totally lacking in energy at all. That wasn't what sank them in terms of success.
There were 2 major problems, one being the LP they put out. It was under the guise of The Pupils(geddit?) & was a Rolling Stones' tribute. All the tracks are on this CD, incidentally, together with both sides of their few singles & some demos.
Trouble was, The Eyes were strongly patterned on The Who, not the Stones. The latter were blues-based, later 50's R & B, the former were soul & 60's R & B-based, so their target audience with that LP was totally at odds with their then-growing fanbase.
The other problem-they never made a killer track. You might well tear walls down to get their original vinyls, simply because they are so rare. You wouldn't do it because the music on them is so hot that you just gotta have it.
Try downloading I'm Rowed Out. Sounds just like The Who's I Can't Explained revved up a bit. I like it, as with most of their stuff, but it just isn't as inspired as what The Who & The Small Faces produced from that time.
Still an essential purchase, just don't seriously expect it to be anything but pretty good. If you want a band that genuinely deserved to be massive & didn't get there, there are better examples in the 60's, 70's & 80's.
