Set in a Victorian era that did not exist, but oh I wish that it did. The doctor of the title is a wounded war veteran in need of a reliable personal assistant and a woman that won't swoon at his scars or run for the hills if he asks her to be his wife. He is fortunate enough to find both in the one package, but despite being a genius, he is afterall only a man, so it takes him a while to realize it.
The wiley French are after his inventions and his government paymaster is only too willing to blame his new assistant for the thefts that take place.
The hero and heroine face various dangers and share a subtle romance. It is an entertaining clean read with a few decent scenes of danger and strife thrown in.
