Product Description

Product Description

Its a profession where the dynamics of fear, faast cars, faster money and spontaneous, yet controlled violence need to be properly understood. Brute force needs to be balanced with intelligent instinct, every escape route must be memorized and trouble-makers must be spotted before they make their move. This is the autobiography of one of the most successful and daring armed robbers of his generation. Reformed criminal Terence Smith reveals the secrets of his success and tells how he became Britain's most wanted criminal, leading up to the chain of events that led up to his first job. It was a job that nearly cost him his life and left him facing a 20-year-stretch.

About the Author

Yet Terence Smith is much more than just another criminal. Dubbed 'College Boy Smith' for his penchant for learning and his sophisticated clean-cut image, his tale is told with a finesse and intelligence that belies his tough East End upbringing. Now fully reformed and having paid his debt to society in full, he tells his story and reveals the astonishing truth behind the life of a professional armed robber. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS 11 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
As the title says, my first impression was one of curiosity, after the first few pages that changed to be one of sadness.
For such a young person to endure so much, a life of crime seems a way to survive for so many people. The book i felt was wrote from the heart but also it had been written with a lot of pride.
Not many ordinary people (if i can say that) would want to put their life into words. (would you?) this i think was not only brave but a way of putting peoples rumours and stories to rest.
(a way to explain)
Robbery may be wrong and hurtful but i think this person has explained the reasons why and proved that not everyone gets away with it. He has done his time, suffered at a cost not only himself but his family too. He shows great love and and caring for his family, friends also his workmates (as this was his job after all) he shows in great detail the prison system and how it can change, how hard and lonley it is, i think terry smith has come through this system with a greater knowledge he did not waste his oppotunities given to him inside the walls, he knows he did wrong and has paid for it in more ways than one (some say he was lucky) the book was a great read infact i could not put it down. this is the best autobiography i have read. i cannot wait for book 2. i am sure he will keep up the strengh and love he has for his family.

THE ART! 13 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
A wonderful true story of Terry Smith's life through crime with all the ups and downs of being imprisoned, on the run, carrying out the armed robberies whilst "free" and the times spent with his family whom he dearly loves. It tells how his life nearly proved fatal during a get-away from an armed robbery and his military style escape from prison when he was labelled as "The most wanted man in the UK". Being from the same area Terry was brought up in I can relate to what life was like in the run-down streets of the east end and how tight money was then. It brings it all home. If you haven't already read this get a copy now!
Strength 'n' Honour.

An Interesting Exploration of a Life of Crime 2 Jun 2006
By D. Buxman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very informative book on the British prison system, written by Terry Smith, a rather infamous armed robber, active in the 1980's, imprisoned most of the 1990's. The title is a little misleading since most of the book concerns the author's prison time, but the stories are interesting nonetheless. I don't feel like I got an "inside look," at the psyche of an armed robber, but rather an autobiography of a life gone wrong and the redemptive power of education. It's also an excellent display of the importance of childhood upbringing.

Sometimes books of this nature are somewhat rough around the edges, but this one was very well-written and edited. It is a very enjoyable piece although, as an American, I struggled a little with some of the Cockney references.
