Product Description

Product Description

If only everything in the countryside came with helpful name tags and instructions attached, knowing stuff about nature would be child's play. Until that day, "The Armchair Naturalist" is on hand to guide even the most urban of settlers in the ways of Britain's flora and fauna. Teeming with illustrations, "The Armchair Naturalist" will transform you overnight into an expert on anything Mother Nature may throw at you, from furry animals to fir trees, cows to cowslips, blue tits to bluebells, toads to toadstools, and much more besides. Astonish your friends as you plunge your hands into nettles without being stung. Be secretly amazed at your newfound talent for predicting the weather, befriending seabirds, and knocking up a nourishing breakfast from even the most unpromising undergrowth. So whether in the countryside or city, get a little more out of the natural world around you by making this pocket-width book an essential item every time you step outside.

About the Author

Johnson P. Johnson has become legendary among naturalists for his keen eye, feel for plant life, and Dolittlesque affinity with animals. Largely self-taught, his lifetime's research into Britain's flora and fauna has led him to become known as 'the naturalist's naturalist'. With The Armchair Naturalist he at last shares his wisdom, and talent with words, with a wider audience.

Which of us hasn't entered the countryside and engaged our companion with the memorable sentence "Oh look - there's a err..err..plant/bird/furry creature (delete as applicable)"? However, not only am I now able to differentiate all manner of flora and fauna but MOST IMPORTANTLY, I am (courtesy of this most excellent book) equipped with specific killer facts which I can laconically use to inform (and impress) my fellow adventurers.

Highly recommended for all those who wish that they knew a bit more about life beyond the armchair - whether in the garden, park or even wilder places.

Wonderful book! 9 Oct 2007

The Armchair Naturalist is a gorgeous book that's beautifully presented and very readable. The idea is to help people who are interested in nature but don't know anything about it, and it's so engagingly written that you can easily get absorbed in it. Memorable facts are clearly and wittily presented, and old-fashioned drawings and a pleasingly retro layout give it a very arty feel. This is a book that's not only lovely to look at, but also genuinely useful to those hoping to learn a bit more about the environment we live in. Buy it!

This book was purchased by me and given to the person below as a present, this is review

Just a note to say how good the book "The Armchair Naturalist" is. It's the wide coverage of the UK's nature in such a small book, that amazes me the most. Examples of the broad coverage are, "how to date a hedgerow" to things like, "They're short horses, aren't they". What!? Whilst there are only sketches of the items described, that description is clear and concise, (I wish I could draw like that!). Great.
