Product Description

Product Description

Since time immemorial, cooking and building have been among humanitys most basic occupations. Both of them are rooted in necessity, but both of them also possess a cultural as well as a sensory, aesthetic dimension. And while it is true that cooking is a transitory art form, it gives expression to the periods of human cultural history just as architecture does. Moreover, both arts accord a central role to the materials employed. Both involve measuring and proportioning, shaping and designing, assembling and composing. This book pursues the astonishing parallels and deeply rooted connections between the art of building and that of cooking. A variety of essays takes up questions of materiality and proportioning. Attention will also be given to food cultivation and architecture, to the places where meals are prepared as well as a range of different culinary spaces. With articles by Annette Gigon, Stanislaus von Moos, Claudio Silvestrin, Ian Ritchie, and others.

As with all Birkhauser books, this is of high quality in terms of contributing authors, illustration and overall production. However, I was a little disappointed by the majority of the material; it seemed to me that the Hesse Chamber of Commerce has tried a little to hard to push the similarities between cooking and architecture, and that some of the contributing architects and critiques who have submitted articles essentially just handed over a piece that they had written for some other journal or publication, after simply adding some reference to 'measures' or 'taste' or 'slow food'. It left me with the feeling that the book was a little bit forced. Whilst I wouldn't go as far as labelling it a conceit, it did feel a little like a construct.

This book has been extremely helpful for my thesis which is about food and architecture. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in either topic. The relations between the two are endless.

horrible experience- not sure who's responsible. 12 April 2010

I ordered the book on the 10th, and got an email on the 17th that the order had been processed. Two weeks later I received an email stating that the book had been damaged during shipping and was returned by the post office; since no others were available, I received a refund for the money I spent on the book and shipping, as well as a $1 Amazon credit. I emailed the seller with this information, and received no reply. I don't know why the book was damaged in shipping- was it improperly packaged? I don't know if it was actually shipped- Did it go to the post office at all? Did the seller fail to stock as advertised, then covered his tracks by saying that a book that never existed got damaged in shipping that never occurred? I ordered a week in advance of my mother's birthday, hoping to give a timely and appreciated gift- the book looked like a fantastic presentation of many of her interests. Instead, I had untimely and insufficient excuses... My mother told me not to bother getting a gift at all, it's too much trouble. I've had very little communication from Amazon or the seller. I am not at all satisfied with my experience. I suspect that the $1 voucher will be wasted- because I have no desire to repeat this sort of disappointing experience.
