Product Description

The Arcane Veil:   'analogue of Craft historiography, brought up to date through the author's own experiential praxis'    A discursive investigation of magical beliefs and practises in England  since 600CE to the post-modern fall-out of the 21st century, analysing in particular its influences and survival strategies. Emphasis is placed on Christian, Heathen, and Hermetic Praxis, with provocative, critical study of the concepts of Lucifer, Witch-Blood, Sin-Eating and their influences on modern Traditional Craft praxes.   "A driving thirst for knowledge is the forerunner of wisdom. Knowledge is a state that all organic life possesses, wisdom is the reward of the spirit, gained in the search for knowledge. Truth is variable - what is true now, will not be true tomorrow, since the temporal truths are dependent upon ethics and social mores - therefore wisdom is possibly eternal Truth, untouched by man's condition. So we must come to the heart of the people, a belief that is based upon Eternity, and not upon social needs or pressures - the 'witch' belief then is concerned with wisdom, our true name, then the wise people and wisdom is our aim." - Robert Cochrane 1931-1966

An Occult classic 22 Sep 2011
I have been privileged indeed to be able to read this book prior to publication, it is set to become an occult classic, and should grace the bookshelves of any occultist regardless of tradition or background. Tackling meaty subjects and grasping at serpents that others would be afraid to hold.
Among the collected essays we find one upon the history of magic, within this the influence of Christianity upon it and how through it's adaptability it has survived, in fact it would have been consumed entirely if those who practiced it refused to evolve with the times. Shani wonderfully reclaims Lucifer in another chapter from the vile clutches of the likes of Lavey and places him firmly within the reach of any serious Crafter, not without its controversial topics "Witch Blood" (there will be heads turning and a small degree of spitting from some quarters) a classic and must read for any seeker of truth.
Thank you once again Shani.

This is the second publication by Shani Oates, Maiden and Head of the Clan of Tubal Cain.
This book is split in two sections. In the first one we learn the history of magic through the millennia. It is all referenced and cross referenced and cross-referenced with plenty quotations from the great minds of history itself.
The second section is a collection of discourses on the Craft. All expressed unbiased and with great emphasis on Truth.
One of the later chapters is dedicated to a theme that has been unfortunately a great point of heated debate. The very thing that hinder our journey towards gnosis, Ego, otherwise known in many so called Traditional groups of recent years that concern themselves with "authenticity" (sic) and revenue as Witch Blood.
Truth itself is the Grail. And we can ALL aspire to attain it and as beautifully expressed by the Author, "isn't such a prize worth harrowing even the Gates of Hell for?

A True Classic 10 Nov 2011

It has long been recognized by occultists and determined Seekers for quite some time now that, as the 20th century reached its troubled climax in giving birth to the 21st, many of the ancient secrets would have to be revealed of necessity. In this book, penned by one of those rarest of the rare, who has both sought & found a true Well of the Wyrd from which to drink, all of these secrets are firmly supported by the twin pillars of history and Tradition. Shani Oates, as an active adept within the inner circle of an authentic later day Mystery cult, preserves the inner Mysteries while still providing the real substance which makes the practice of the arcane arts a possibity to be actualized. She does so by literally parting the veil, and as such, she adds her name to the select roster of such rare authors as Paul Huson. Even as I write, some esoteric schools are investigating, maintaining, and teaching aspects of the ancient Mysteries that would otherwise have already been obscured or lost to forvever, laying buried beneath today's lamentable avalanche of 'new age' feathers; which while empty fluff, nonetheless weigh quite heavily against Tradition. This book provides much needed material in the form of Ten Discourses, all of which are composed delightfully while running over with the real thing in this time of pale imitations and make-it-up-you-go along fantasy. Shani Oates does anything but "go along" with this corrupting trend of foolish fantasy regarding the Craft. This book will, however, go along to prove itself a true classic. Consider it mandatory reading for all Seekers who wish to profit from rare and invaluable signposts along the often treacherous winding and crooked Path of The Cunning Folk, This path is the razor's edge itself in this, the Age of Iron, the time of quickening or failure. Shani Oates proves an authentic guide across a part of the sharp edge itself, from which so many topple endlessly, left forvever cleaved in twain falling forver within bottomless Abyss of error.

From 'The Hedge Wytch' [Samhain edition 2011]

"What an inspirational writer! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The Arcane Veil is this author's eagerly awaited second book and it delivers on multiple levels. The author's knowledge is outstanding both in depth and application, and you are given an enlightened overview of the Craft's real background, not the nostalgic pap that is peddled in too many modern new age books. Each essay ends with a useful bibliography for further reading. The book discusses the many aspects of the Craft through specific themes. This is well researched and informative, drawing on literature and folklore as well as documented fact, but differs in that the author proffers her own interpretations and insights: she is prepared to challenge such sacred cows as witch blood, clearly defines different traditions within the Craft and sets us straight about the origins and reasons for many modern ritual practices like casting a circle, the use of correspondences, the relevance of salt etc. The book challenges certain traditional practices that some would prefer to see set in stone whilst also encouraging us to deepen our understanding of others, but always from a spiritually led perspective. It is not afraid to acknowledge crossovers with other faiths, specifically Christianity, yet holds true to the mystical core of Traditional Craft. Included is a fascinating and thought provoking essay on the little known subject of Sin Eating, which has nothing to do with the Catholic concept, but clarifies some of Robert Cochrane's oft misinterpreted ideas about sin and certain ritual observances. Altogether, this book has an astonishing depth and breadth, and though written in a very academic style is unexpectedly relatively easy reading, enhanced by a few beautifully drawn, black and white illustrations and a lovely, enigmatic cover painting. The whole book gently leads us beyond the veil and draws us to a more perceptive awareness of the Craft. We do not have to agree with the author's views, but I doubt many of us could argue a case with such passion, intelligence and insight as you will find here. This lady not only has a superior understanding of her Craft, but she obviously walks her talk and is dedicated to her path. It is a privilege to read such elevating and accomplished work. Every witch and serious student of the arcane should have this book in their personal library."
