Review

Brilliant . . . humorous, if violent, romp featuring quirky characters and situations (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

Most of the Scottish Werewolf Clan have a very low opinion of Kalix Macrinnalch, youngest daughter of the Thane. There is little sympathy for her illiteracy, her substance abuse, her self-harming, her eating disorder, her anxiety, depression and propensity for extreme violence. Safe from her clan in London, and living with two friendly students, she's been much calmer. If only she were allowed to live quietly, she might get on top of her problems.

Unfortunately, that's difficult for the young werewolf. She's still the number one target for the werewolf hunters, and they're stepping up their efforts to find her. And no matter how Kalix tries to make her life more normal, there will always come a time when, under threat, her insanity and battle-madness will descend on her, and the skinny young girl will again transform into the most feared and ferocious werewolf in the country.

Please write more Kalix books Mr Miller . I have been reading since I was six in 1946, my first book was Treasure Island , thousands of books later and I don't know when I have enjoyed three books more than this series, they work on so many levels, even helps me understand my granddaughter, no she is not on laudanum !
Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and now Martin Miller so great to find new, to me, authors .

A new book by Martin Millar is always a cause for celebration as far as I'm concerned and when that new book is the latest in the series featuring the most dysfunctional werewolf you're ever likely to meet, then it's champagne all around.
The Anxiety of Kalix the Werewolf is the longest of the series (at 665 pages) but doesn't suffer the fate of so many books of its size. It never sags. It grips you and keeps you turning the pages. In achieving this, it proves a worthy successor, not only to the first two books in this series, but also to the great body of work the author has produced so far.

This is a clever and funny book. I won't say anything about the story because nothing is obvious in this book and even a hint might spoil one of the elegant twists and turns.

What I will say is that we see real, and often quite touching, character development in all the main players together with some new people who look interesting.

The real joy of this book comes not so much from the twisty, clever and amusing storyline but the easy humour and interaction between the main characters. The author has a real talent for blending normal "human" relationships with fantastical events in a way that underpins your suspension of disbelief.

If you are a fan of Martin Millar (aka Martin Scott for the newly revived and very funny Thraxas series) then this is a must buy. I can't wait for the next one.

The first two books were very well-written and total magic. The third book amps up the action and moves it along beautifully. The characters are as good as it gets, the writing superior, and the plotting ingenious. Gotta love Dominal and the twins, even if Kalix is the centre. Joan Jett and Donatella Versace? It simply doesn't get any better.
