Synopsis

This six-disc set contains three BBC adaptations of Anthony Trollope novels. Includes:

Barchester Chronicles - adaptation of Trollope's great classics The Warden and Barchester Towers. The quiet cathedral city of Barchester is turned on its heels with the arrival of the new Bishop and his domineering wife, and the cosy life of Rev. Harding and his colleagues will never be quite the same again. An amusing, affectionate look at the politics and pleasures of 19th century rural England filmed in the beautiful surroundings of Peterborough Cathedral.
He Knew He Was Right - Louis Trevelyan's refusal to believe in his wife Emily's fidelity destroys a perfect marriage and drives him, literally, insane. Suspicious beyond reason that she is having an affair with Colonel Osborne, a man of dubious reputation, he forces his wife out of the house, hires the seedy private detective, Bozzle, to spy on her and organises the kidnapping of their son with devastating consequences. Throughout, Emily's proteststions of her innocence, and the couple's love for each other despite the estrangement, render the story moving and tragic.
The Way We Live Now - Set against the backdrop of the railway boom of the 1870s, this epic tale of Victorian power and corruption captures the turmoil as the older is swept aside by the brash new forces of business and finance. It is packed with the trials and tribulations of young love, the enduring values of honourable men, the raw energy of one of the most powerful cities on the world and the greed and corruption that lay below its glittering surface.

Not to be missed 3 Aug 2009
Barchester Towers was, of course, a superb production, but for little more money this now comes with 'He Knew he was Right' and the superb 'The way we live Now'with the great David Suchet leading a wonderful team of actors. How little seems to have changed since Trollope was alive! Don't miss this. At Amazon's price, a bargain.

Classic BBC drama 9 July 2009
By Lizbeth
Wonderful to have a record of these excellent BBC productions of some of Trollope's best work. Donald Pleasance is outstanding as the Warden and contrasts beautifully with his worldly son-in-law, played by Nigel Hawthorne. Geraldine McEwan's Mrs Proudie is a tour de force and Alan Rickman plays the hateful Obadiah Slope (the role which launched his career). Fascinating to see David Tennant shine in a small but telling role as a vacillating clergyman in 'He Knew He Was Right'. The third drama, 'The Way We Live Now' provides a Victorian parallel with our own times. Costumes and settings are all beautiful and the quality of production very high.

This entire Trollope DVD set is a winner, but The Way We Live Now is absolutely phenomenal and ranks among the finest of such screen adaptations that I've ever seen in my life. Furthermore, if you thought that David Suchet was a great actor, wait till you see him as Melmotte, a Robert Maxwell of the 19th century. Suchet's performance is stupendous and anticipates his masterful handling of the role of Robert Maxwell in the TV film 'Maxwell' which I'm also desperate to get on DVD. If you value the BBC's tradition of impeccable production standards in period adaptations of novels as much as I do and enjoy a good thriller to boot, then buy this set at the excellent Amazon price!

This is a brilliant set. I had seen Barchester Chronicles before, but not the other two series. Alan Rickman and David Suchet are particularly good. Well worth the money!
