Well, most of the Jimmy Reed you`d ever need.
I don`t think I`ve heard such a genial blues singer as JR. No guitar solos, short songs, a few harmonica breaks along the way, and stalwart Eddie Taylor`s backing guitar filling in with some choice, tasty riffs. All presided over by Jimmy`s sly, unhurried, restrained vocals.
I used to sometimes hear Reed on the radio when I was young, but his r`n`b sound passed me by for some reason, perhaps because it is so diffident, so unshowy. But listening to him now, I find I can`t get enough - though the 54 tracks you get on this superb compilation are more than enough to be going on with.
The inner sleeve has notes by none other than Welsh rock/blues man (and much else) Deke Leonard, sometime leading member of the Man band, extracted from his wittily titled book The Twang Dynasty, which is, unsurprisingly, about guitarists.
Jimmy Reed lived from 1925 to 1976, dying of respiratory failure due to an attack of the epilepsy that plagued his life. He`s been highly influential, especially on rock and blues bands, including the Stones. He straddles the hinterland between outright blues and r`n`b, never as upfront as a Muddy Waters or as forceful and ominous as John Lee Hooker, but just as enjoyable in his own modest way.
I find myself returning to these tracks a lot. They`ve got something unique about them, something honest and true - like all the best music.
Jimmy Reed: essential.

I have downloaded various tracks from JR previously but never purchased an album. At 5 I reasoned that there was not that much to lose (Life in the fast lane....). I RANK THIS AS ONE OF THE BEST PURCHASES I HAVE EVER MADE. Not only did I get the CD but all 54 tracks were supplied free in MP3 format. So much for the physical product then comes the music. The album contains 54 tracks (all shortish a la Jimmy) but I can honestly say that every track is great with many being absolutely classics. I would go as far as to say that I have never purchased or heard of many other music collections that could claim such a high hit rate; and when you consider that this is measured over 54 separate tracks as opposed to 8/10/12 - that is some achievement. Obviously you would need to be able to appreciate the unique talent that he was and love the music that he created - BUT I COULD AND I DO - and all facilitated by AMAZON.

Another blues legend and one of those guys that you never hear about. Jimmy Reed is right up there and this anthology is great. You'll listen and then wonder why he's not spoken about when you hear the names of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf etc. Jimmy Reed; a forgotten master of the blues - yes indeed!
