By R. Mann
Format:Paperback
Avis calls his book 'an introduction' - this it certainly is, but anyone expecting a breezy beginner's guide is in for a shock. This is a tightly argued, rigorous summary that takes the reader to the heart of key issues shaping the Anglican Church's self-understanding whilst providing him/her with enough intellectual 'oxygen' to enable more advanced study. In short, this is a book that both stands on its own as brief, but potent argument and as a guide into deeper waters. A fine introduction.

Good Introduction 9 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I was looking for some kind of introduction into the Anglican church and their faith. So I was looking for some short work, which is not to scientific but also not to sketchy and with this one I got a pretty good compromise.
It gives a good insight in the structures of the church, their fundamental belives, their self-understandig but also some in their problems. But sometimes it is already a bit too short because to explain differnt aspects of the church the author reverts to some theological concepts without really explaining them. That makes it necessary for somebody without a profound theological education to look them up in other sources. So sometimes the book would have been easier accessible if it would give some explanations right away in the text. Especially because the target reader is probably somebody without a profound theological education this would give this introduction a fith star.
But anyway it is a good, recommendable introduction for anybody who wants to find out more about the Anglican understanding of the curch.

VERY GOOD 24 July 2008
Format:Paperback
I was lent a copy of this book, but found it so good that I have just ordered my own copy. A very good book for anyone who needs some perspective on why they are an anglican or perhaps why not. This book describes anglicanism in a very clear and rounded way. I have read it as someone who is looking to ordination and I found it a very affirming read, and especially helpful when completing those Bishop's conference forms and answering those deep and meaningful questions that come one's way. I found it uplifting, affirming and exciting. It just goes to show don't judge a book by its cover.
