First Sentence
Now and then the western clouds after sunset assume a shape resembling that of a vast extended wing, as of a gigantic bird in full flight-the extreme tip nearly reaching the zenith, the body of the bird just below the horizon. Read the first page

This fascinating book reviews the evidence for the famous ghostly sightings of angels, St. George, Joan of Arc and the Virgin Mary during the Great War. The author marshals a large and complex body of evidence to produce an accessible account. His open-minded approach is refreshing, and he wears his research lightly, although there must have been an awful lot of it! He is a university lecturer in journalism, which explains the slight bias in favour of 'Fleet Street's Finest'! But if you didn't know that, you probably wouldn't have spotted any bias.

Perfect! 26 July 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this book to look into the possibility that the Angel of Mons and similar sightings might have been occurrences of noctilucent clouds (do a search for this if interested). With the majority of sightings happening during summer, this account, so lucidly written, provided me with enough evidence to conclude that at least some of the reports really were noctilucent clouds.

The author might be interested in fringe issues, but in this book, he's very balanced and has turned-out a very valuable, important book.

Wonderful Book 20 Nov 2004
Format:Hardcover
The definative account of the mystery. It is difficult to see how this could be improved. Clarke examines the evidence in detail and provides a fascinating account of the development of a modern myth, created by one of the worlds best writers Arthur Machen. Anyone intrest in the Great war and urban legends should read this.
