Product Description

From the author of The Boy in the Moon – an Irish black comedy.

A romantic comedy – of sorts…

Robert has taken a long time to fall in love, and finally, he does so – with Angela. He thinks she’s the angel he’s been waiting for. And she certainly does have angelic qualities, but underneath she’s something else entirely, something Robert can’t quite fathom. Who, or what, is she committed to that takes up so much time? Why can’t she invite him home? Why is she so guarded about her early life growing up in Ireland with the strange Aunts Bridie, Regine and Maisie? And why, exactly, has her Uncle Mikey stayed in the attic for the last fifty years?

Pungent and funny, packed with hilariously grotesque characters. A rare mix of comedy and really fine writing.

Kate O’Riordan is one of most interesting Irish writers around, and has gradually been gaining a substantial readership and reputation.

The Boy in the Moon reached No 2 in Ireland (Angela’s Ashes was No 1). Great review coverage too.

I had never heard of this author before but have been bowled over by this novel. I engaged with the characters immediately - I adore Angela! And the minor characters are portrayed so vividly too. I particularly liked the Aunts and Robert's mother, and Mary Margaret is outrageousl - I kept picturing an irate Brenda Fricker in the role! I loved the first description of Angela's aunts as tea is prepared: 'From their respective corners the sisters closed in around the formica-topped table. A slow, vampiric procession. Each groaning louder than the other.' Wonderful!

I look forward to reading more of Kate O'Riordan's magical stories.

Kate O'Riordan creates a wonderful picture of what it's like to be a young girl with dreams in her head, and desires in her heart. This is a novel in which we can see the grains of deeper meaning, but still allows us to laugh at the sharp Irish wit that comes through beautifully in the text. O' Riordan captures the Irish dialect perfectly in Angela, so that everybody can hear the voice, and almost see the woman, so vividly described. Read it!

I read this book in the space of a day and now it's finished I feel slightly bereft. Quite apart from the immediate love story of Robert and Angela, this is a tale of the secrets individuals hold from one another, even in families; of religion's hold on the living and the demands it makes in return; and of the human need to repair and love. Kate O'Riordan writes vivid dialogue you can hear in your head, and no word is wasted on the page. These are characters who will stay with you long after you finish the novel. ane beneath the wit and sparkle of her writing are deeper darker waters that give depth to a tender romance of human confusion. A truly wonderful book.
